Fall 2019 Book Sale - Volunteer Application
It's our favorite time of year again! The annual Fall Used Book Sale helps the Friends of the Library raise money to support library programs and services in Multnomah County. Your support is essential in making this book sale a success. If you have any questions or concerns about completing this application, please contact Lisa Jordan, our Volunteer Coordinator, at: booksale@friends-library.org. We welcome volunteers 16 years and older.

BOOK SET UP/PRIOR TO SALE: Standing, walking, lifting, organizational
Location: sales floor
• Unpack, stack and place books on tables by designated genre
• Help place signs, banners and other decorations

BOOK COUNTER: Mostly seated; work quickly, accuracy important; previous experience welcomed!
Location: Pre check-out area
• Tally number and price of books for each customer; calculators provided
• Fill out tally sheet
• Include FOL membership fees if applicable
• Send customer to cashiers with tally sheet

BOOK DEPOT: Standing, heavy lifting, fast pace, accuracy important; must be at least 18 years old
Location: Book Depot area (behind the scenes)
• Accepting a customer’s books and info
• Ability to lift heavy boxes a plus!
• Storing boxes in an organized manner until the customer is ready to check out
• Tally the price of books and complete boxes at one time for high-volume purchases

CASHIER: Seated; must have prior cashier experience at a Friends Sale
Location: Cashier line at long tables
• Accept payment, make change
• Provide receipt
• Share info about upcoming events, e.g., trivia, next sale

CLEAN-UP AND RESTOCK: Continually moving
If you're interested in this one hour shift, please consider doing the shift right before too. This helps our coverage so much!
Location: Book sale floor after closing for the day
• Re-stack and organize books on tables
• Stock tables with additional books for next day

COLLECTOR'S CORNER: Standing; friendly, outgoing, watchful; previous experience welcomed!
Location: Collector's Corner area (high-end books and collectibles)
• Welcome customers into CC area and collect their bags while they shop (bag check)
• Assist CC staff with customer questions and monitoring inventory
• Tally number & price of books/purchases
• Cashier - if trained to do so (more detailed instructions will be provided prior to or at the sale)

EXIT MONITOR: Standing; friendly
Location: book sale exit
• Check receipts for payment
• Thank customers for shopping with FOL

EXIT MONITOR/BOOK LOADER: Will share the same responsibilities as EXIT MONITOR and will also be available to assist customers out to their car with larger purchases; must be able to lift heavy boxes

GREETER: Standing; outgoing and friendly
Location: front entrance of book sale
• Welcome customers as they enter sale
• Provide book maps, offer a box to carry purchases, answer questions
• Count customers with clicker (provided)
• Remain at location until relieved by next volunteer

HOSPITALITY: Limited movement, seating available
Location: Volunteer hospitality area
• Remain in the hospitality area
• Stock and restock refreshments & beverages as needed
• Keep the area clean
• Thank volunteers for their service

LINE MANAGEMENT (formerly Crowd Control): Standing; friendly & helpful; assertive
Location: Book check-out area
• Direct people to the front of the line
• Make good decisions about directing customer flow to book counters and cashiers
• Conduct exit survey

PACK UP & CLEAN UP/POST SALE: Lifting, carrying, lots of movement
(Help is always needed here)
Location: Book sale floor and area
• Pack up books
• Disassemble displays inside and outside
• Clear out hospitality area
• Fold tables and other tasks as required

TABLE STOCKERS: Continuous movement; organized & friendly
Location: Book sale floor
• Continually straighten tables, consolidating books as they are sold
• Refill tables with overstock
• Replace books to proper tables if misplaced/abandoned
• Assist customers in locating specific sale/interest areas
• Help enforce "1 box at a time" rule

TRIVIA SET UP: Lifting, carrying, lots of movement
Location: Book Depot
• Dismantle Book Depot
• Stack empty boxes
• Take down poles and curtains
• Set up table and chairs for the trivia event
