AUDITIONS • Queer & Now: Sex Ed
Queer & Now is an unapologetically feminist, trans-inclusive, futuristic devised physical theater company that combines drag, lip syncing, and dance to create evenings of joy, liberation, and empowerment for its performers and audiences.
Our newest installment will be centered on queering practices in sex education. Using lip sync, dance, humor, and a whole lot of honesty, we will tackle underrepresented issues in sex ed.
Please come out and audition to be part of this exciting new work.
Sunday, February 23
UMass Amherst Fine Arts Center 204*
Please sign up for a 2-hour interval between 12:00–6:00 pm.
The intervals are:
*UPDATE 2/21: We will meet all folks auditioning in the lobby of the Curtain Theater (accessible from the Herter Hall side) at the UMass Fine Arts Center, at the top of each group audition start time — 12pm, 2pm, 4pm. We will then proceed to a space depending on the size and needs of the group at the start of each session. We have room 204 in the UMass Fine Arts Center available, as well as a classroom in Herter Hall.
There will be no separate callbacks. In the 2-hour interval you sign up for, we will ask performers who we need to see more from to stay to work on additional material.
Auditions will be group exercises with other folks who have signed up for your time slot. You do not need to prepare anything for the audition. All we ask is that you come dressed to move.
We strongly welcome performers of all identities! You do not need to have any drag experience to be a part of this ensemble.
Rehearsals will take place on weekends between March–April, supplemented by occasional weekday evenings, as available.
All possible dates include: March 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29; April 4, 5, 11, 18, 19, 26, 30.
Schedule will be finalized based on team availability.
The rehearsal process will include an in-progress showing at UMass in early May (date TBD depending on team availability – either May 1, 3, 5, or 6).
Additionally, ensemble members must be available for a 3-day residency at The Foundry in West Stockbridge, MA from May 14–16. Housing can be arranged for this residency.

Queer & Now is a piece of devised theater. Devised theater is non script-based theater created through ensemble collaboration. Have you ever done devised theater before? Have you ever collaborated with an ensemble in creating a performance?
Being a part of Queer & Now: Sex Ed will involve independent research and rehearsal outside of our scheduled meeting times. Can you commit to doing this?
What compelled you to audition for this?
