Readiness Checklists for the Certificates of Competency (CoC) and Watermanship (CoW)
The following readiness checklists offer the chance to check or self-assess your 'rowing know-how' and what you will need to be able to demonstrate as part of the practical assessments for the CoC or CoW.

These checklists come in two formats: this Google Form (below) or you can complete the PDF version (electronically also) at bit.ly/ReadyToHaveACoW-pdf – this version is useful because it gives you a bit of a steer as you step through each section (use the 'i' icon where shown within the PDF version).

Whichever version you choose, you can save your answers and return at any time to update your answers. When completing this Google Form version, you will need to bookmark the link given on-screen upon submitting your response for the first time.

An overview of the CoC & CoW checklists below (and guide to help prepare for a practical assessment)
FIRST TIME HERE? PLEASE READ ME FIRST
Read on for an introduction, explainer, instructions and answers to the most frequently asked questions.

If you have been here before you can just skip down the page to hit the ‘Next’ button.
1. What are these self-assessment readiness checklists for?
What follows is the full set of readiness checklists for the Certificate of Competency (CoC) and Certificate of Watermanship (CoW).

These checklists, which go into more detail than those shown at bit.ly/WEYSafetyCode, are intended to help guide you in assessing your own skills and preparedness for taking the practical assessment to receive your CoC and then your CoW as:
  • Bowsteer (CoW1),
  • Single sculler (CoW2), and/or
  • Cox (CoW3, Cox Levels CL1, CL2 and CL3) or Tideway Steer
  • and includes elements for the CoW as Coach/Risk Assessor (RA).
Members with a CoW have delegated responsibility for carrying out an appropriate risk assessment on behalf of their crew before boating.

Nominated CoW Assessors will award the certificate, which is then shown Here.
2. Who should complete these readiness checklists?
The following checklists are for anyone preparing for the CoC and CoW practical assessments.

New members who have sculled/steered before joining Weybridge RC need to be assessed within the first few sessions of being on our reach, so providing to the Club the required evidence of their competency for making their own risk assessment, boating unaccompanied, and navigating and returning safely.
3. How do I know if I have a CoC and/or CoW?
To check if you have your CoC 1.0, CoC 2.0, or CoW as Bowsteer (CoW1), as Single sculler (CoW2), and/or as Cox (CoW3, Levels 1, 2 and 3) – also the CoW Coach/Risk Assessor (RA) – please visit weybridgerowing.club/wey-to-have-a-cow
4. What if I have already completed what's needed for my CoC?
If you have already completed your CoC (using this checklist or not), you can skip ahead to the next section to complete the checklist for your CoW. However, if you are unsure or elements for the CoC in Section One (1.1 to 1.4) look unfamiliar, please do run through it again, thank you.
5. How can I get to know our reach?
Obviously besides spending time on the water on our reach, you can also get to know our reach using the handy guide at bit.ly/WEYToSteer-pdf
6. What do I need to have done before having a CoW?
Prerequisite to obtaining any CoW (bowsteer, 1x, cox, coach) is to be awarded your CoC (1.0 for coxes and coaches, 2.0 for bowsteers, single scullers or coxes who row also). A core part of the CoC is completing Part 1 of the bit.ly/WEYSafetyQuiz-P1, but for a CoW, BOTH parts must be completed, i.e. also bit.ly/WEYSafetyQuiz-P2

You can check you have completed and passed the quiz by visiting bit.ly/WEYToBeSafe.

Once these elements are done, please read below for which sections of this self-assessment to complete in readiness for your practical assessment, depending on which CoW you wish to have: Bowsteer, Single sculler (1x), Cox, Coach/RA.
7. How can I be sure I am ready for the practical assessment to have a CoW?
When making your self-assessment below, any 'No's and 'Unsure's should be revisited after seeking out more opportunities to get on the water with experienced members (listed Here) in the boat or alongside, as well as maybe refreshing bits of your knowledge of our Club Safety Code (bit.ly/WEYSafetyCode), completing BOTH parts of bit.ly/WEYSafetyQuiz-P1 AND bit.ly/WEYSafetyQuiz-P2  (check you have at bit.ly/WEYToBeSafe), and reviewing other safety information – all available at weybridgerowing.club/water-safety

By providing your email address above (required), you will receive a copy of your answers, so you can return again and again as needed. Once you are ready – i.e. answering mostly 'Yes's – please arrange for your practical assessment either by emailing the Club Rowing Safety Adviser (RSA) (safety@weybridgerowing.club) or by checking our safety log for a CoW Assessor and arranging a time with them: bit.ly/WEYToBeSafe

Your completed self-assessment will be checked by a Nominated Club Assessor (CoW Assessor). A log of CoW Assessors is shown at bit.ly/WEYToBeSafe. Your assessor will be the same person to take you through all the practical elements for your CoW – for instance, for the 'CoW 1x', rowing a single to the EA barges and back, without instruction.
8. Which sections of this self-assessment should I complete for my CoW as a Bowsteer?
Prior to your practical assessment, please have completed below all elements for the CoC and numbers 2.1 to 2.4 under CoW1 Bowsteer.

PLEASE NOTE:
This CoW assessment may be carried out in the bow seat in any boat. This CoW1 (CoW as Bowsteer) also means that you can row independently using the club's new SUP Rowers (more at weybridgerowing.club/post/a-tale-of-two-sup-boards).

If you are keen to learn and develop your skills for foot-steering a coxless quad/four (4x-/-), please email or speak with your squad coordinator:

Prior to your practical assessment, please have completed below all elements for the CoC (Section One) and Section Three (3.1 to 3.4) for CoW2 Single Sculler, where 3 of the 4 checklists refer back to checklist items under CoW1 Bowsteer (Section Two, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.4).
10. Which sections of this self-assessment should I complete for my CoW as a Cox?
In the first instance, if you are keen to get into coxing, please check out bit.ly/WEYToCox (also as a PDF at bit.ly/WEYToCox-pdf)

Prior to your practical assessment, please have completed below all elements for the CoC (next section) and section 4 - CoW3 Cox – starting with Cox Level 1 (CL1), then CL2, and in time, CL3. For details on what is involved at each level, please go to section 4: CoW Cox & CoW Coach/RA certifications.

Prior to your practical assessment, please have completed below all elements for the CoC (Section One) and Section Four - headed CoW3 Cox / Coach/RA levels 1, 2 and 3 (CL1, CL2, CL3) as applicable - a description of each level is given under Section Four.

Note: The CoW Coach/RA is distinct from being a Nominated Club / CoW Assessor
12. Who can I approach if I have any questions?
For any queries, feel free to speak with or email your squad coordinator:
