Performance Animating Social Justice
June 25-July 31 2018

How does art animate social change? How do justice seekers activate art effectively for their movements? In this 6 week course we will research the work of performing and visual artists who seek to use their pieces to propel social movements. The goal is for each student to articulate a proposal for a piece of visual or performance art that strategically serves a particular social movement. Each session will include in-class writing and devising assignments as well as discussions of critical readings. We will also be visited by guest artists that will share the successes and challenges of creating and producing work that seeks to instigate change. For the final presentations, we will invite social service workers from various fields to discuss the strategic potential of each proposal.
