When: Thursday, March 31, 2022; 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Speakers: Margo Kennedy MSW, Brendan Lyver, Dr. Christian Schulz-Quach

The Sexual and Gender Diversity in Cancer Care (SGDc) working group was established to support LGBTQ2+ patients and their chosen families while receiving inclusive care at UHN. To date, we have improved accessibility and navigation through implementing an information hotline and providing a curated overview of provincial and national resources. Our group has recently established a gap in the delivery of patient-centered care, with preliminary evidence showing that over half of HCPs (55%) do not feel knowledgeable about LGBTQ2+ health needs, and most HCPs (96%) are interested in receiving comprehensive education (Jivraj & Croke, 2021). These local findings align with systematic review evidence suggesting low rates of HCPs asking about patient pronouns, gender, sexual orientation, and relationship identity, with only 8% of oncologists feeling confident in their LGBTQ2+ specific knowledge and communication strategies. This presentation is going to focus on the four main pillars of the SGDc (pronouns, gender identity, sexual orientation, relationship diversity) and we are going to engage with the audience in a critical discussion about the most meaningful and effective ways of creating change in healthcare organizations.
