The session will explore effective strategies for creating vibrant and sustainable urban public spaces within informal settlements through youth engagement and community participation. The discussion will draw on real-world examples from Nairobi's Mathare slum, such as the Mathare River Rehabilitation Project and the development of the Mathare Community Park. These projects exemplify successful community-driven urban regeneration initiatives that integrate environmental, social, and infrastructural development.
Speakers:
- Safrina Irùngú: Safrina is a community organizer and advocate for environmental and youth empowerment initiatives in Mathare, passionately leading efforts like cleanups and social impact activities to foster a sustainable and inclusive future.
- Theresa Budzinski: Communications Specialist with UN-Habitat, focusing on sustainable urban development and public space initiatives.
- Isaac Muasa: Works to empower youth and the community to realize environmental conservation and social justice in the informal settlements in Kenya.
- Tala Cockar: Director, Co-Designer, Builder, Rad Earth Africa which designs new public spaces such as skate parjs that inspire creativity, self-discovery and re-connect the community to the world they live in.
