Debate Mate Pre-Registration: 20-21 Programme!
Are you currently attending university and do you want an incredible opportunity to change the lives of young people?

Debate Mate is an educational charity that works in areas of high child poverty, and teaches key 21st century skills through debating. We employ a peer mentoring model, where YOU, inspiring university students, mentor for a period of 17 weeks from November – April, teaching debating to either primary or secondary school students. Teaching debating is an incredibly rewarding experience and a great opportunity to impact the lives of young people that really need it.

About Debate Mate:

In 2019-20, the Debate Mate programme went from strength to strength, and nearly 5000 young people took part in our programme each week across the country. We also offered a virtual debating programme, where students could take part in online sessions from home or from school during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What you do:

We need mentors with a passion for teaching and debating to mentor on our programme. You will teach one-hour, weekly debating sessions to students in years 5-10 over a period of 17 weeks, including our two national competitions: the Urban Debate League and Debate Mate Cup. We ask that you make a commitment to mentor for the duration of the programme, and if you’re available to work in more than one school per week, that’s brilliant!

Get paid per hour session:

You will receive a stipend of £20 for each 1 hr session you deliver (and reimburse your travel costs) plus £30-90 for any additional training or competition days - nearly £400 for the year mentoring in just one club! We provide comprehensive and in-depth training to make sure you’re prepared to go in to our schools. We also conduct DBS checks on your behalf.

Why get involved:

One of the key inhibitors to social mobility are the lack of ‘soft skills’ - confidence, communication, creative and critical thinking – which are exactly the skills that debating develops. Mentoring on our programme allows you to change the lives of young people by teaching these skills, acting as role models, and inspiring students to raise their aspirations. You will also gain valuable experience that is great for your CV, and are exposed to our organisations we work with such as Teach First, Deutsche Bank, Artemis, Credit Suisse, Slaughter & May, Shell, Deloitte and more!

Our 2020-21 programme will operate in London, Manchester, Bristol and Liverpool. We are delivering a modified programme in the West Midlands (Coventry and Birmingham), Nottingham, and Leeds - as a result we will require fewer mentors in these areas, however please sign up below if you are interested in mentoring in any of these regions and we will get in touch with you regarding the opportunities available.

COVID-19 Contingency Planning:

We anticipate that our programme may be delivered differently next year in case of further lockdown, school closures or additional restrictions which may limit our ability to run our after-school clubs and competitions in schools. The health and safety of the Debate Mate community is our top priority, and we will ensure that our programme complies with the most up to date guidelines. If we are unable to deliver sessions and competitions in person, we will ensure we are prepared to adapt to the circumstances and offer our programme online. We will provide additional training and support to make sure all mentors are equipped to deliver the programme in any circumstance, and will keep you updated with information about what we expect the programme to look like.

Please fill in the form below to register your interest in mentoring with us, and we will contact you when assessment sessions open in your region, which will run at the beginning of the academic year and will be held online. If you mentored in our 2019-20 programme, you will only be required to attend the training session and do not need to attend an assessment.
