Volunteer Interest: Design, Software and General Support with Hope.xyz
Hope.xyz is a digital space for social change, where personal experience, community stories, and issue-based testimony transforms advocacy efforts and amplifies advocates’ most significant experiences and messages to support community education, policy change efforts, and community-based social justice initiatives.
And our team is a small but mighty group of social advocates and technologists working to support grassroots organizations succeed in telling community stories around social and community issues. Why stories? Because In the landscape of today’s social and digital world, it takes both powerful stories and powerful digital media strategies to reach the communities, leaders, funders, and legislators who can turn those stories into action. Thus far, Hope.xyz has supported dozens of organizations: building community involvement, strengthening organizing networks, raising money, and changing policy, all through the power of strategic, storytelling and digital story sharing.
To date we've run these story-collection and storysharing campaigns on behalf of labor unions, tenant support networks, environmental justice organizations, progressive political candidates, and progressive ballot initiatives. Our goal in 2022 and 2023 is to expand our work, make our resources more available to similar partner groups to those we've serviced in the past, and create new resources to enable progress-oriented community organizations to share the stories of their communities and grow the impact of their movements.
We are searching for UI/UX designers, software engineers, community organizers, grant-writers, and community leaders interested in our work to help us redesign our platform, improve our capabilities, and successfully build a community platform both where stories can be shared and distributed to target audiences, but also where stories can serve a unique roll in supporting relational organizing work, and activation around social issue advocacy.
For UI/UX designers, we are looking for passionate designers interested in supporting the design of two different user groups: we intend to build firstly an improved community-video sharing platform to serve as an online digital organizing tool and personal testimony sharing space. We also intend to build an organization-focused user workflow to support grassroots organizations' use of video in their advocacy work.
For Software Engineers: we are looking for interested and creative engineers with a background in video. Our platform currently uses Firebase and is hosted on AWS, but we will be rebuilding the site to accommodate increased user capacity, more powerful resources and enhanced security features for organizers and advocates using the site.
For Grantwriters and Policy-focused individuals, we would welcome your expertise in successfully soliciting grants from foundations and other community institutions to ensure the longevity and sustainability of our work, as well as your perspective in support in improving the strategy of our work to have maximum impact in community advocacy, organizing, leadership development, and ultimately concrete policy change.
Interested in our work? Feel free to fill out this intake form and name the skills you're looking to contribute, and your weekly availability. We're looking for volunteers with expertise in grant-writing, community organizing, social media management, communications, and graphic design. We'll look forward to hearing from you!
