This Tuesday (9/19) at 9:30 AM, the Progressive Caucus of the New York City and grassroots allies are holding a rally at City Hall Park to stand in solidarity with our new immigrant neighbors and condemn sweeping cuts to City agencies that will inevitably harm new and old New Yorkers alike (flyer attached)..
Adams' proposed budget cuts of nearly 15% to every city agency will disproportionately affect essential services like child care, parks, hospitals, schools, and social services. However, according to a recent analysis by the Fiscal Policy Institute, these cuts far exceed the $6.5 billion needed to cover the estimated migrant expenses over the current and next fiscal years. These dangerous cuts will harm New Yorkers and migrants alike, exacerbating an already challenging situation.
We believe that New York City needs compassionate leadership and competent management from City Hall. Adams’ exaggeration is creating fear and division in our communities at the exact time New Yorkers should be coming together to welcome asylum seekers. We understand that the City is facing numerous challenges and that compromises will have to be made, and as elected officials in New York, we are ready to engage in those conversations once the Mayor comes to the table. However, we know that now is the time to bring our communities together to stand in solidarity with new New Yorkers and to ensure that all of our communities get what they need to thrive.
