WCS Canada Bat Acoustic Analysis Training Course – Expression of Interest Form

Wildlife Conservation Society Canada’s Bat Conservation Program, led by Dr. Cori Lausen, is organizing an in-person Bat Acoustic Analysis Training Course, taking place June 15–19, 2026, in Kamloops, BC. The course is open to individuals residing in Canada who are involved in bat research and conservation. Course fee is $2,500 CAD, with possible scaling based on participant category.

This hands-on course will focus on appropriate deployment of bat detectors, principles of bat acoustic analysis, and species identification (all Canadian bat species) using Kaleidoscope, SonoBat, and Anabat Insight software. Participants will work with recordings of Canadian bat species, gaining practical experience across diverse acoustic datasets. Participants will learn about a range of detectors from Titley Scientific (e.g., Swift, Chorus, Ranger, Roost Logger) and Wildlife Acoustics (e.g., SM2BAT, SM3BAT, SM4BAT, SM Mini Bat). Evening field sessions will provide opportunities to practice detector deployment techniques in real-world settings, including active monitoring.

This course is best suited for participants with some prior familiarity with acoustic analysis software. While advanced expertise is not required, participants are strongly encouraged to explore the software in advance or review online training materials and tutorials provided by Wildlife Acoustics (Kaleidoscope), Titley Scientific (Anabat Insight), and SonoBat to become comfortable with basic functions before the course. All participants are required to bring their own laptop and ensure that the relevant software is installed and functioning prior to the start of the course. Training licenses for these software will be provided ahead of time for installation.

As space is limited and interest is high, we are currently accepting final expressions of interest for the 2026 course. Completing this form does not guarantee a spot, but ensures you will be considered if space remains.

Please complete the form below to indicate your interest. If you are unable to attend on the scheduled dates, you are still encouraged to complete Section 1 to be added to our mailing list and receive notifications about future course offerings.

Applications for the 2026 course are reviewed on a rolling basis, and participants will be accepted until all available spaces are filled.
