What is Plein Air?
The term “plein air” was used to describe Claude Monet and the Impressionists in France. In French it
means “open air” or “outside,” but since Monet’s time the term has been used to describe people who
take their easels outdoors to paint. Plein air painting is for people who love to be outdoors in nature,
people who love to paint landscapes (as well as other outdoor subjects like buildings, cities, old barns,
farm equipment, statues, flowers, gardens, and people). Painting outdoors offers artists the pleasure of
being in nature, and the ability to “stop and smell the roses” because of the need to concentrate on a
single scene until the painting is completed. Many artists carry a portable easel in their cars or when
they travel so they can stop and paint a scene that inspires them.
All participants are required to come with all materials they will need for the day of painting.
These items include: paints, easels, brushes, canvas, or paper if working in watercolor.
Participants will need to pick up their packet at 37 Lewis St. starting time at 6:30 AM. Someone will
be at that station to handle registration for most of the day beginning at 6:30 AM. There you will
have your canvases or paper stamped and your number assigned. Painters will need to have there
finished work framed and on their easels by 4:30 PM at the Maine Federated Church Fellowship
Hall for the judging.
