Beta Reader Interview
This interview is not only for you to tell me about yourself, but also to inform you of how Beta Reading works. It will take 5 to 10 minutes to complete, so please make sure you have enough time to read through each section.
Note: This is not a contract, but an interview to get us both on the same page.

The Purpose of Beta Reading
I use Beta Reading for the purpose of Developmental Editing, which is the process of finding issues within the story: plot, character, setting, etc. It isn't necessary to catch all the grammatical or punctuation errors at this point because I will be sending it to the editor after we're done. Beta Readers are fabulous for helping smooth out the story itself, chapter by chapter.
FOR EXAMPLE: When editing Wingbound...
1. I accidentally changed a character's eye color from the beginning to the end.
2. There was a "prop" issue where a saddle was never removed from the dragon in one scene and was gone in the next.
3. Another Beta Reader helped me see one of the characters needed to be described earlier.
4. There was a scene that had NOTHING happening, so a Beta suggested I shorten it and drop the boring stuff.
Let's find those pesky holes!
Do you have experience with Beta Reading or Developmental Editing?
How to Beta Read
I'm looking for feedback scene by scene, chapter by chapter, and the overall story. Beta Reading can be an acquired skill to pay attention to holes. One of the telltale signs to keep in mind while reading, is when you are pulled out of the story, when the movie stops playing in your mind, and your conscious thought takes over. Ask yourself why?
1. Is the story slow in this chapter? Why?
2. Is something confusing?
3. Or missing?
4. Or not believable?
5. Or is it the wording/grammar?
Feel free to point out when any of these happen and if you want to go one step further with a SUGGESTION of what might help that particular scene.
In addition to finding the trouble spots... I love getting feedback about what a reader enjoys about the story. I can use all the encouragement I can get! Feel free to all-out fangirl over the characters, plot, and setting. Tell me what you love! I will add a feedback questionnaire at the end of each chapter. You don't have to use it for every chapter (especially if you blaze through it and don't want to stop because it is just that awesome!)
How do you prefer to read it? SECOND CHOICE:
How would you like to give feedback if you are reading a digital copy?
I will give feedback via EMAIL. (You can simply have a saved email draft that you feedback on each chapter or every other, or the whole thing when you finish.)
I would like to fill out a FORM online.
I would like to use "Track Changes" and "Comments" in Microsoft WORD.
How do you prefer to read it? FIRST CHOICE:
PRINT COPY DETAILS
SKIP TO THE END IF YOU SELECTED DIGITAL COPY FOR BOTH PREFERENCES.
If you selected PRINT copy for any of your reading preferences, please fill out your address below for mailing purposes.
**There will only be a limited amount of print copies available and are chosen based on feedback level. If you are available to give a lot of feedback throughout the book or at the end of each chapter, you're more likely to be chosen to receive a print copy.**
Feedback Level for print (check all that apply)
I plan to give a brief summary of my overall thoughts of the story at the end of the book.
I like to give feedback after every scene/chapter (telling what I liked/disliked, what worked/didn't work.)
I like to write short notes within the text (page by page), when I see the need.
I will probably do all of the above.
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to Beta Read with me. Your feedback is so valuable!
