Healthcare Workers for Medical Right to Repair
The COVID-19 crisis has underscored the need for a more cooperative relationship between medical equipment manufacturers and hospital clinical engineering departments. But this problem is not new -- some manufacturers routinely restrict hospital repair technicians (biomeds) and independent service organizations from accessing repair parts, manuals, diagnostic information or training to repair and maintain equipment.

As a result, we pay higher prices for manufacturer repair and deal with delays while we wait for manufacturer technicians to travel to our hospitals to make fixes that our onsite team could make if armed with the right information and tools.

That’s not an acceptable outcome for healthcare workers. We rely on functional medical equipment to deliver life-saving care. When that equipment is broken and awaiting a fix from a manufacturer-branded technician, our hands are tied and patient care suffers.

Right to Repair reforms, which provide biomeds with access to repair parts, tools and information at a fair and reasonable price, would help to address the problems that our biomed colleagues face and build a more resilient healthcare system. For these reasons we, the undersigned doctors, nurses and healthcare workers, strongly support Medical Right to Repair.
