Rio de Janeiro is a primary tourist resort and attracts 2.8 million tourists a year, whereas York, which is steeped in history, attracts a huge 6.7 million visitors a year.                                                                                                    The Christ the Redeemer statue is Rio’s premier attraction which has been named one of the new seven wonders of the world. Other attractions include the Copacabana beach, which stretches over 4km - it is one of the most famous in the world. The botanical gardens share the diversity of Brazilian and foreign plants. Moreover the site has over 6,000 species - some of which are endangered.                                                                                                   York has a number of attractions - one of the best known is York Minster which is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. York is a walled city; and since Roman times the city has been defended by large walls and even to this day large parts of the walls still remain. York Castle is also part of two medieval walls. In addition, these defences are the most complete in England. Other historic sites include the Jorvik Viking Centre where remains of Jorvik City have been discovered along with many other artefacts.

York has a climate with four distinct seasons (Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring) whereas Rio de Janeiro has a tropical savanna climate, which means it often has long periods of heavy rain from December to March. York’s average temperature is just 22 degrees Celsius compared to Rio de Janeiro’s average annual temperature which is higher at 27 degrees Celsius and in summer temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius are common.
