What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapy or OT, is a form of movement therapy that helps kids who struggle with everyday fine and gross motor tasks that are crucial to their development and lives. Occupational therapy can also be used to help kids who struggle with self-regulation and sensory processing issues and improves confidence in the classroom, at home, and at play. A therapist uses a variety of fun and creative movements, exercises, tools, and pieces of equipment to best meet the needs of each child.
Gross Motor Section
Gross Motor (physical) skills are those which require whole body movement and which involve the large (core stabilizing) muscles of the body to perform everyday functions, such as standing, walking, running, and sitting upright. It also includes eye-hand coordination skills such as ball skills (throwing, catching, kicking).

Fine Motor
Fine motor skills are finger and hand skills such as writing, cutting, opening lunch boxes, and tying shoelaces. The development of these skills relies upon the age appropriate development of physical skills (gross motor skills) providing the stable base from which the arm and hand can then move with control.

Visual Motor Section
Visual motor integration is the coordination of visual perceptual abilities and fine motor control. It is a skill that allows us to use our eyes and our hands in a coordinated and efficient way. A child may not have any visual issues with acuity or perception and may not have any challenges with hand strength or dexterity, but if the connection between their visual and motor system is not as organized or efficient as it should be, it could result in difficulties with visual motor skills.
