MMA THINK-TANK DIVISION
During our preliminary meeting of the taskforce division , one of the portfolios under the improvement of services of the organization was to look at ways of engaging the “ to be housemen” in a useful and fruitful manner.
Of recent there has been lot of bad press that the prolonged wait for the housemanship has even made some of them take part in criminal activities. MMA therefore wishes to take the initiative to find ways of engagement to minimize harm to these people.
We arrived at a consensus that these aspiring housemen may be given “attachment” for learning clinical skills under supervision, such as interview technique, How to think through a logarithmic template for diagnosis?, How to plan investigations and differential diagnosis?
This would enable the attaches to keep themselves familiar with “medical thinking process” and help them remember basic clinical skills. Importance of bedside manners, courtesy, confidentiality, sensitivity and communication skills will be fined tuned.
Attachment to clinics will be voluntary and as observers only. No payment is to be made. However attaches’ may be treated to food and drinks whilst under supervision. The attaches will at no time be encouraged to act as locum as they are not registered doctors.
MMA would appreciate it very much and would like to invite doctors in clinical practice to support by taking one or two candidates. A template for their training ( log book) will be prepared soon and sent to participating doctors and is subject to audit to look at skills improvement.
An initial survey of Housemen in waiting shows that 90% of them would take up the opportunity.
ATTACHMENT PERIOD WILL BE FOR 6 MONTHS AND RENEWABLE AT THE DISCRETION OF THE TRAINER.ATTACHMENT CAN BE TERMINATED BY EITHER PARTYA FEEDBACK FORM IS REQUIRED FROM BOTH PARTIES.NO PAYMENT WILL BE MADE TO MENTORS or MENTEES WHO ARE PARTICIPATING IN THIS VOLUNTARY PROGRAM
