A Note on Rabbiteye Blueberry Bushes.

Ideally suited for the Piedmont, rabbiteye type blueberries (V. virgatum, syn. V. ashei) are exceptionally heat-tolerant, drought-resistant, and more adaptable to local soil types than highbush varieties. These low-maintenance plants are among the easiest fruits to grow in the South, with mature bushes typically yielding 10 to 25 lbs of delicious berries annually. To maximize flavor, fruit should be harvested every 10 days, allowing for peak sweetness without the berries becoming soft. By planting a combination of varieties with different ripening times, growers can enjoy a continuous supply of fresh fruit throughout the entire summer season. To ensure this bountiful harvest, remember to plant at least two different varieties to provide the necessary cross-pollination for maximum yields.
