The Actor's Nightmare & Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You | Audition Form
From the Director:
The great Einstein once said, “A question that sometimes drives me hazy; am I or are the others crazy?”
These two one act plays are a lot of fun, and a little dark. And will leave you questioning the perception of your own reality.
I have made the decision for one cast to perform both one act plays. The roles have been paired based on character type, age, and stage time. so please prepare to read for both roles. I will be casting 2 men, 3 women, and 1 youth male (the young boy will only be cast in Sister Mary).
George/Aloysius…. Meg/Diane…..Sarah/Sister Mary…… Ellen/Philomena…..Henry/Gary…..Thomas
Actors Nightmare is very personal to me because I was in it in high school and played Meg, the Stage Manager (shocker). It is a very funny play that will keep the actors and the audience on their toes.
Sister Mary does require some of the actors to sing. The singing is done as part of a gag, so it doesn’t have to be good, in tune, or on key. But please, try your best.
Sister Mary features a lot of political topics; the Me Too movement, religiously motivated violence against the LGBTQ+ community, a woman’s right to choose, addiction, and gun violence.
There is no nudity, but there are some strong adult themes, language, and violence. There will also be a lot of laughs, and good times to be had by all.
Thank you for your interest,
-Hayley Bowker

Character descriptions:
As I said before the characters in the two shows will be double cast. The characters have been matched based on stage time, stage presence, and playable age.  Please become familiar with both; listed are the characters with how they will be double cast starting with the description for the Actors Nightmare character, then the Sister Mary character.

George/Aloysius (male late 20’s early 30’s)
George, or maybe Stanly, but probably George is possibly an accountant but definitely not an actor. Confused and just trying to figure out if he is having a really bad dream or if this is all just a bad joke.

Aloysius is one of Sister Mary’s former students. The forceful and strong presence of the Nuns left him to grow up as shy and weak and left him with an alcohol addiction.

Meg (voice overs)/Diane (female late 20’s early 30’s)
Meg, your standard Stage Manager. Forceful and direct will do anything to make the show go on, even if that means going on stage herself. She also announces each play before it begins from off stage.

Diane- another former student. Had a tough life, mother died of cancer, Diane was abused and raped, and wants someone to blame.

Sarah/ Sister Mary (female early 50s to early 60’s)
Sarah is a grand, glorious, and dramatic actress. Over the top and serious about her craft.

Sister Mary is a Nun who believes, like most nuns, that her God is all powerful and all knowing. His word is law, and she will do anything and everything to make sure his word is followed, and it’s in your best interest to listen.

Ellen/ Philomena (female late 20’s to early 30’s)
Ellen is another actress, not as grand as Sarah, but still serious and dedicated to her art.

Philomena is another former student of Sister Mary. She is a single mother who is raising her daughter out of wedlock

Henry/Gary (male late 20’s early 30’s)
Henry is a classically trained Shakespeare actor
.
Gary is one of Sister Mary’s former students. He lived his life by the good book, which was a struggle when he realized he was gay.

Thomas (male, around 10)
He is Sister Mary’s favorite student. He goes above and beyond to impress Sister Mary. And she loves to show off all she has taught him, and he loves the cookies he gets when he recites the commandments.
