2019 Great Books Academy Application (June 23 - 28)
High school students will spend five days and nights (June 23-28) on Mercer University’s historic Macon, GA campus. In addition to discussing classic texts in the areas of philosophy, history, literature, and the sciences, participants also will gain hands-on experience with liberal arts activities related to areas such as music, art, genetics, theater, literature, biochemistry, and physics. This program will bring together bright and inquisitive college-bound students with some of Mercer University’s outstanding faculty. Together, they will explore texts that address some of the most enduring human questions and problems. Past Academy offerings have included excerpts from the Republic, the Iliad, the Federalist Papers, and Shakespearean plays, and authors like Montaigne, Lavoisier, Aristotle, and Herodotus.

The program fee of $650 includes housing, all meals, books, supplies, and recreational activities. This enriching, unique, and exciting educational experience is intended for students who have completed grades 9-11 (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors). Make your summer EPIC!

Applications are open and reviewed weekly until the Academy is full.

A $25 deposit is due (applied toward the $650 fee) after acceptance. At this time there are no scholarships for the Academy.

Dr. Kloepper, a chemistry professor, co-directs the Academy. In addition to teaching chemistry and Great Books courses she also directs a Mercer service-research initiative, Research That Reaches Out.
