This application is Phase 1 of our hiring process. In this phase, we ask candidates to submit a short 2–4 minute video (the shorter the better). We are not looking for a polished production, simply take out your phone and record yourself explaining a 2nd grade phonics concept using explicit instruction.

Along with your video, the answers you provide to our application questions (teaching philosophy, availability, experience, and background) help us identify strong candidates to move forward.

Candidates who advance will go through the following next phases:

✔ Phase 2: A live interview to discuss your experience and teaching approach.

✔ Phase 3: A demo lesson with real students to showcase your instructional skills in action.

The Science of Reading has challenged the use of the 3-cueing system, arguing that it leads to guessing instead of decoding. Yet, some educators still incorporate it in early literacy instruction.

What do you think? Should the 3-cueing system have a place in teaching word decoding?

Absolutely! Using context clues, including pictures, helps students decode words.

It can be useful when combined with phonics instruction to provide multiple ways for students to read unfamiliar words.

No, students should rely on phonics alone, not strategies that promote guessing.

Research shows that movement and fidgeting can help many students, especially those with ADHD, stay engaged and focused while learning. However, some educators believe that sitting still and demonstrating “whole body listening” is necessary for effective learning.
