Newport Grammar School Virtual Learner Contract
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, families will have the option for their child(ren) to participate in virtual learning for the 2020-2021 school year. Parents/guardians must complete and electronically submit this contract by Monday, July 27 in order to participate in the NGS virtual learning program. If you have multiple children attending NGS this fall, a separate contract must be completed for each. Outlined below is a basic description of the program, as well as rules and expectations for parents/guardians and students. PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION CAREFULLY! If you have any questions, please contact the school M-F 8:30-3:30 at (423) 623-3811.
As an alternative to traditional, "in-person" attendance at school, students at Newport Grammar School may receive instruction in an online/virtual format for the 2020-2021 school year. Instructional activities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Teleconferencing or videoconferencing in real time (synchronous learning)
- Completion of assignments or projects in an online program (asynchronous learning)
In order to participate, students must have access to an appropriate device such as a desktop or laptop computer or Chromebook, as well as functioning and reliable internet service. Additionally, parents/guardians must provide a working email address and telephone number for contact purposes.
The school attendance requirements currently in force for traditional "in-person" students also apply to virtual learners. The Tennessee State Board of Education defines virtual student participation as 6 1/2 hours per day for students in grades 1 - 12 and 4 hours per day for students in kindergarten. Daily attendance will be taken by teachers of virtual students by participation in teleconference/videoconference activities or by submission of online assignments.
Once a parent/guardian selects and a student is assigned to the virtual learning pathway, he/she must commit to that pathway for at least ONE 9-week period. At the end of each 9-week period, parents/guardians will be given a window during which they may request that their child(ren) return to school for traditional instruction beginning in the next 9 weeks. If no request is received during the window, the child(ren) will continue with the virtual pathway.
Parents/Guardians of virtual learners must attend an online orientation session to learn about the process and expectations of virtual learning and ways to support their child(ren)'s learning in an online format.
