Artificial Intelligence is a topic that has become ubiquitous with many fields and locations. The social and inter-institutional implications are complex and diverse.
The case study of the events surrounding the publication of the paper "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots:
Can Language Models Be Too Big? 🦜" (On the dangers of stochastic parrots Video version) and a review of major AI related events since with the state of the field survey "Why AI must be decolonized to fulfill its true potential." are our guiding texts.
This debate will act as an activation space for Penn community to communicate and learn of different perspectives on topics like gender, labor, multilingualism, globalization, and environmentalism with AI as the focal point.
Debate Layout
1. Apply to become a Debater here in this form. Debaters must be present for the 10AM-12PM portion of the events on February 27th, 2024.
2. Skim the texts. What is your initial reaction to the paper? Do you think the issues raised in the paper warrant a closer look at AI? Regulations? Of what sort?
3. Selected Debaters will be given the prompts to prepare for and discuss on the day of by February 19th at 11:59 pm for review or notes before the event.
4. During the event, the Debaters will sit in the middle of the room, while others in the audience sit in a circle around the "fishbowl."
5. The 4 Debaters discuss the topics at 5-5-5-5 minute intervals followed by 10 minutes of Audience interactions. And onwards to our next prompt.
