Understanding St. Louis Bus Tour Registration
During a special bus tour on Sunday, October 13, from 1 to 5 p.m., Women’s Voices members will learn about places in the St. Louis community that are frequently in the news.
The tour will be conducted by Bob Hansman, of Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Art and the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement. A lifelong resident of St. Louis, Hansman calls the experience “Understanding What We See: The Grief, Love and Fury Tour.”
“Too often, we see pictures in the paper or on TV of places in midtown or north city and county and we really don’t know what they are,” he says. “There is no context. We don’t understand why things are the way they are, and we don’t know anything about the policies and decisions that made them this way. This tour will give us a chance to ask questions and get answers.” The tour is suitable for members’ teenage relatives, Hansman said.
Sites on the itinerary include the new location for the National Geospatial Agency; the Shelley house, which was the focus of the 1948 Shelley v. Kraemer decision that struck down racially restrictive housing covenants; the Ville; the Wellston Loop; and Ivory Perry Park.
The tour is limited to 35 people and will depart at 1 p.m. from the back parking lot of the Ethical Society, 9001 Clayton Rd., 63117. Cost is $20 per person. Payment must be received no later than Monday, September 28. Make checks payable to Women’s Voices and mail to 7401 Delmar Blvd., University City, MO 63130. To pay by credit card, return to
