Harvard Classics Club is delighted to invite you to the 16th annual Harvard Certamen on Saturday, April 11th, hosted in-person! See our website for a tentative schedule.

This year, schools may bring three teams per level (i.e. 3 novice teams max, 3 intermediate teams max, 3 advanced teams max) without any special permission. If you wish to bring more teams, please contact us at harvardcertamen@gmail.com.

The tournament this year will be FREE for all players. Players should remember to bring some money with them for our new merch, including Harvard Certamen-themed shirts. Keep an eye out for more details soon!

Please note that wildcard players CANNOT progress beyond preliminary rounds and may be combined with wildcard players from other schools.

Make sure to sign your teams up for the appropriate level! This is based on their level of Latin at other NJCL events, not necessarily their grade level.
  • Novice: Latin ½ or 1 (usually, but not always, 7th and 8th grade for schools that start Latin in 7th, and 9th grade for those that start in 9th)
  • Intermediate: Latin 2 (usually 9th grade for schools that start in 7th grade, 10th otherwise)
  • Advanced: Latin 3 or above
Please contact us if you have any doubts about where your students fit in these rules.

I certify that I am registering all of my teams for the appropriate division based on their level of Latin.

I understand that their level is NOT determined by their Certamen experience, only their level of Latin (e.g. Latin 2 students must sign up for Intermediate, not Novice, even if they have never played Certamen).

I understand that wildcard players may play up (e.g. a novice may play as an intermediate wildcard), but may NOT play down (e.g. an intermediate may not play as a novice wildcard).
