Volunteer Guidelines & Positions

The African American Day Parade, Inc. is currently seeking volunteers to help out with our 50th Annual African American Day Parade. We want to collaborate with individuals that share our values and wish to engage in service that will enrich the community. Each of our volunteer roles and responsibilities are listed below. Also, AADP offers community service credits and letters or recommendation to interested student volunteers. Please note you MUST attend at least 3 volunteer meetings to be eligible to volunteer for our 50th annual parade. In addition, you MUST be at least 18 years of age to sign up.

Parade Overview:
• 50th Annual African American Day Parade: Sunday September 15, 2019 from 1PM - 6PM in Harlem, NY
• Parade route begins on W. 111th St. & Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd (ACP)
• Proceeds north to W. 136th St. ending on Malcolm X Blvd.
• AADP participants line up between 111th and 114th Street on both sides of ACP which total eight (8) city blocks

Roles & Responsibilities Include:

VIP/Welcome Tent Coordinator: Located on 111th Street & ACP
• Greet guests & offer refreshments
• Sign-in dignitaries and honorary guests
• Give out sashes
• Serve food to special guests, staff & other volunteers
• Assist with area set-up and clean up

Block Coordinators:
• Check-in Participants/Organizations
• Line-up participants within assigned block
• Provide direction and instruction to participants
• Assist security personnel with directing participants into parade route

Assistant Block Coordinators:
• Check-in participants/organizations
• Line-up participants within assigned block
• Collect contact information from participants
• Assist block coordinator with tasks

Host & Hostesses:
• Greet all participants and direct them to assigned blocks
• Answer parade related questions
• Guide marchers along the parade route
• Assist at the end of the parade route with directions & disbursement instructions for participants.

Reviewing Stand Personnel: Located on 125th Street & ACP
• Greet guest & check tickets
• Serve light food & refreshments to guests
• Assist seniors and other guests with any questions or concerns
• Assist with area set-up and clean up

Security Personnel:
• Assist AADP security personnel throughout the parade route
