2020 Backyard Gardens Application
Build It Up is launching the sixth year of our Backyard Gardens Program! We are accepting applications from families and individuals who wish to learn how to garden at any scale. The deadline to apply is Feb 7, 2020. Applicants will be notified by the end of February if they've been accepted into the program. For the full program details, please be sure to read through our Program Description on the Build It Up Website:
There is a $15 application fee, but the program is free for participants after that. This fee is not meant to be a financial barrier, if you cannot pay it for whatever reason, please email Lexy at
to request a fee waiver form. Information about how to pay the fee will be emailed once you have filled out this form.
The funding for this program comes from Grow Appalachia, a foundation from Berea College in Berea, KY. The program will focus on Organic and Sustainable gardening methods. Participants will be required to attend 6 workshops throughout the year and to record all produce harvested. In exchange, participants will receive plants, seeds, fertilizer, tools and lots and lots of support for growing food for yourself and your family!
Please note that our geographic area of service is Carter, Unicoi and Washington Counties. We will consider applications from within 25 miles of Johnson City, if from a county not listed. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept applications from outside this radius. If you are in Sullivan or Johnson County, please contact Appalachian Sustainable Development's Grow Your Own Program (
