UFT - We Call for a Fair Endorsement Process for the 2020 Presidential Election!
We, the undersigned, are members of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) who call on our local union to engage the membership in a democratic process to decide which presidential candidate to endorse for the purpose of the New York State primary through a binding, one-member, one-vote poll.

Typically the UFT has followed the endorsement of our parent union, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) in presidential elections. But this year is different. The AFT has given local unions like ours the official go-ahead to make our own endorsements. The AFT press release reads "As part of this AFT Votes endorsement process, we have enabled locals and state federations, if they choose, prior to any national endorsement, to endorse a candidate for the purpose of their state primary or caucus." This announcement follows the decision by the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA), an AFT affiliate, to develop a process for members to discuss the presidential endorsement in local meetings, which ultimately resulted in a vote to endorse Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary.

The leadership of the American Federation of Teachers has acknowledged that in 2016, our union’s endorsement process was rushed and excluded the voices of most members, and resulted in a premature decision and membership discontent. We are UFT members throughout the city - paraprofessionals, teachers, psychologists, nurses, librarians, professors, counselors, coaches, and more-- who are committed to building a strong union through democratic processes like this one.
