Below is a listing of the local scholarships administered through the High School Guidance Office.

Please fill in the information CAREFULLY and COMPLETELY.

Please check "apply" for any scholarships you qualify for. Some scholarships require an essay. To "apply" for essay-based scholarships, complete the essay in the space provided. If a scholarship requires additional letters of recommendation or materials, please put your name and scholarship title on each page and turn them in to the Guidance Office by the due date.

AJ Karvonen Memorial Scholarship - One at $500
***GPA requirement 2.0-2.99. Intended for a student planning to attend a trade school, a 1-2 year certificate program or an apprenticeship program. Applicants must demonstrate strong individual character, as evidenced in a brief written statement addressing one of the following statements: Describe how have you contributed to the well-being of others in your family or your community OR Describe a situation where you used humor and compassion to demonstrate strong character.
Annmarie Hytinen Memorial Scholarship - Two at $500
***Must be accepted or enrolled in a Michigan accredited college, university, trade or technical school. Above-and-beyond kindness, thoughtfulness, genuine care for others and a giving spirit are central to this award. Complete an essay describing how you feel the award will help you to leave your mark and make the world a better place.
Ardes & George Williamson Memorial Scholarship - One at $500
***Outstanding mathematics senior going on to further education.
Barbara Lehtonen Family Scholarship - Two at $1000 or One at $2000
***2.0 GPA, Available to those pursuing a four year college degree or a two year vocational/technical program. Student must reside in Negaunee School District boundaries, must be a confirmed member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Negaunee, must be a current member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Negaunee, must be (or have been) involved in community service.
Bell Auxiliary Scholarship - One at $500
***Minimum 2.5 GPA. Student must be admitted to a university or community college in a bachelors or associate degree program. Good character, citizenship and attendance will all be taken into consideration. Outstanding volunteerism that goes above and beyond the general requirements is important. Be detailed in your application to show this.
Betty Holman Memorial Scholarship - One at $500
***Designated for a student pursuing a degree in education and having financial need.
Chartwells Culinary Scholarship - Minimum of One at $1000
***Intended for a student entering the culinary field through furthering their education.
Cindy Johnson Memorial Scholarship - One at $250
***This scholarship will be awarded to the top accounting student.
Dick Koski--FEMALE Scholar Athlete Scholarship – One at $500
***2.75 GPA. Multiple sports participation and excellence. Achievement in sports (post-season honors, records). Excellent citizenship and leadership skills. Student must write a PARAGRAPH of what athletic participation has meant to him. Only applications that include this paragraph will be considered for this scholarship.
Dick Koski--MALE Scholar Athlete Scholarship – One at $500
***2.75 GPA. Multiple sports participation and excellence. Achievement in sports (post-season honors, records). Excellent citizenship and leadership skills. Student must write a PARAGRAPH of what athletic participation has meant to him. Only applications that include this paragraph will be considered for this scholarship.
Dr. James Lehto Scholarship - Three at $500
***Upper one-third of class, excellent citizenship, character and financial need. One award will be designated for student pursuing a career in education, the other awards are for any college major or degree.
Dr. John B. Anderton Memorial Scholarship - One at $1000
***Minimum 2.5 GPA. Intended for a student furthering their education at NMU. Preference given to students interested in Archeology, Earth Science, Geography and Environmental Studies. Some evidence of financial need.
Dr. E. William & Dorothy A. Sivula Scholarship - One at $500
***Excellent citizenship and character with marked financial need.
Earl R. Borlace & Aileen Hill-Borlace Memorial Scholarship - Two at $1000
***Intended for a student who is continuing their education who has EXCELLENT character and citizenship.
Elliot Family Memorial Scholarship - One at $1000
***Given to a student who has participated in a music program at Negaunee High School (Chorus, Band, or Orchestra) who will pursue a higher education certificate or degree. Preference given to a student entering a music related field.
Excellence in Writing Scholarship in Honor and Memory of past NHS English Teachers (Betty Zesiger, Berlyne Miller, and Brian Peterson) - One at $500
***Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must be of sound moral character, and planning to pursue a career in English, Writing or Journalism. Preference given to individuals who are community oriented.
Frank Matthews Memorial Scholarship - One at $500
*** Minimum 2.0 GPA. Community involvement very important.
Fred and Joyce Benzie Memorial Scholarship - One at $500
***Minimum 2.5 GPA. Hardworking student who is committed to finishing what they start. Someone who is reliable, has potential for future success and has financial need.
George Collins Memorial Scholarship - One at $1,000
***Minimum 2.5 GPA. Child or grandchild of an NHS graduate. Hard worker, involved in school and community activities, planning to attend a vocational school or university. Based on financial need.
Hilma Pynnonen Van Eerden Scholarship – One at $1,300
***Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must be attending NMU as a full-time student. Preference given to a student entering the field of education. Financial need not necessary.
Jean Humphrey Memorial Scholarship for the Culinary Arts - One at $1,000
***Minimum 2.5 GPA. Intended for a student pursuing education in the Culinary Arts in an accredited program. Please write a short PARAGRAPH describing your professional goals.
John Argall Memorial Scholarship - One Male and One Female, $250 each
***Minimum 2.0 GPA. Must have participated in sports all 4 years, please LIST below sports involved and years completed and also complete an ESSAY about "What does being a Negaunee Miner athlete mean to you and what life lessons have you gained from your experience?"
John Basolo NIT Service Scholarship - One at $500
***Minimum 3.0 GPA. Have participated in a sport for at least one year during his/her high school career. Have donated at least 50 hours of service during his/her high school career as a volunteer and have a least two LETTERS of recommendation to document part of this service. Financial need considered. Please complete a short ESSAY (250-500 words) about how you have benefited from volunteering in the community.
Just Believe Scholarship - In Memory of Jodi Ball - One at $500
***Intended for a student pursuing a career in the medical field.
Keith Wangberg/Class of 1948 Scholarship – One at $400
***Given to a student who is furthering their education through apprenticeship, trade school, 1 or 2 year certificate, associate or bachelors degree. Preference given to someone in electric/electricity related fields. School involvement important.
Larry Peterson #47 Scholarship - One at $300
***Intended for a student pursuing a career in the vocational/trades field. Preference given to someone attending NMU.
Margaret K. Bartle Memorial Scholarship - One at $500
***For student who displays excellent citizenship, character, and financial need.
Mary Trolla Scholarship Fund - One at $500
***Intended for a student who will be attending an accredited college or university, majoring in a music-related degree program. Preference will be for vocal music first, secondly trumpet, thirdly violin and finally any music major. In answering your scholarship questions, please be CERTAIN to specify music related degree and what music related activities you were involved in, specifying vocal/instrument details.
Matthew Worthington Memorial Scholarship - One at $500
***Minimum 2.5 GPA. Accepted at NMU, not receiving other significant financial award through Negaunee High School. Positive social person with emphasis on independent thinking and nonjudgmental outlook.
McNabb Family Scholarship - One at approx. $1,400
***3.0 GPA. Excellent citizenship and character, financial need, and study of engineering or public administration.
Miner Moving Forward Scholarship - One Male and One Female, $250 each
***Intended for a student who has demonstrated the Miner Traits such as good character, involvement in extra-curricular activities and motivation for post-secondary education. Applicants must write a summary of their goals and passions beyond high school.
National Honor Society Scholarship - Two at $250
***Demonstrated desire and ability to go beyond National Honor Society criteria, excellent moral character, positive example to their peers and community. Member of National Honor Society. Write an ESSAY below (minimum 250 words) highlighting your service, leadership and character.
Neely Family Scholarship - Two at $500 (Award Pending)
***Intended for a student furthering their education. Preference given to a student who is interested in working in the finance field or having a career related to banking.
Negaunee Band Backers Scholarship - One at $500
***Minimum 3.0 GPA, in high school band minimum 3 years, be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year degree program, financial aid may be considered. Must provide a LIST of musical activities/achievements and a short PARAGRAPH explaining what music means to you.
Negaunee Booster Club Scholarship - Minimum of four at $500
***Minimum 2.75 GPA, have participated in high school activities and have completed a minimum of 2 Varsity sport seasons. Preference may be given to children of active NHS Booster Club Members. Write an ESSAY on “How Participating in Negaunee Miner Sports Prepared Me for Life”.
Negaunee City Fire Department Scholarship – One at $500
***Minimum 2.5 GPA. Negaunee resident with excellent citizenship & character. Write a short PARAGRAPH below explaining financial need and future goals. Please mention in your paragraph if you have family member(s) serving with the fire department.
Negaunee Education Association - One at $500
***Minimum 2.5 GPA.
Negaunee Elks Youth Music Scholarship - One at $300
***Minimum 2.5 GPA, participation in a music program at NHS required.
Negaunee Environmental Studies Scholarship – One at $750
***Minimum 3.5 GPA and planning to major in an environmentally related field.
Negaunee High School Alumni Association Scholarship – One at $500
***2.5 GPA or higher, child or grandchild of an NHS graduate, hard worker, involved in school. Please note the name of the NHS grad you are related to, their graduation year and relationship to you.
Negaunee High School Staff Denim Day Scholarship - One at $500 or Two at $250
***Scholarship will be given to students who have made a lasting contribution to Negaunee High School.
Negaunee Lion’s Club “We Serve” Award - Three at $500
***Minimum 2.5 GPA. Based on need, strong evidence of community service. Please write a PARAGRAPH below describing what involvement in community service has meant to you.
Negaunee Public Schools Citizenship Scholarship - Two at $1000
***Based on community service and involvement. Please answer questions on the scholarship application thoroughly.
Negaunee High School Student Council Valedictorian Scholarship – (Amount Pending)
Negaunee Rocks Scholarship - Two at $1000
****Minimum 2.5 GPA. Intended for a student who is interested in furthering their education in the business/entrepreneurship fields. Please complete a brief essay outlining your ideas for how pursuing business/entrepreneurship fits with your future goals and personality.
Negaunee Township Fire Department Scholarship - One at $500
***Resident of Negaunee Township, minimum 2.5 GPA, excellent citizenship. Write a PARAGRAPH below explaining financial need and future goals---AND---Deliver two LETTERS of reference to the Guidance Office by deadline.
Norman “Boosta” Stanaway NIT Scholarship – One at $500
*** Minimum 2.5 GPA. Community involvement, participation in Negaunee athletics.
North Jackson Company Scholarship - One at $500
*** 3.0 GPA or higher. Accepted at a 4-year college or university, preferably in the science field, financial need.
Oddfellows Scholarship - One at $700
***Must enroll at NMU in a one or two-year program and have marked financial need.
Paul J. Meli Memorial Athletic Scholarship - One at $500
***Minimum 2.5 GPA with excellent citizenship and good character. Have participated in sports for 4 years during his/her high school career. City of Negaunee or Negaunee Township resident. Accepted to an accredited vocational/technical school or college/university and having financial need.
Paul Symons Memorial Athlete Scholarship - One at $500 or Two at $250
***Minimum 2.5 GPA or higher. Attending NMU for any degree level. Student must have good character with financial need. Must be a multiple sport participant with one being Track and Field. Be certain to note your specific sports participation on your application. Please include a PARAGRAPH below detailing how sports has made a positive effect in your life.
Peer Coach Scholarship - Two at $100
***Available to students who participated in the Peer Coach Program at any time during their 4 years of high school. Preference given to someone pursuing a degree in special education, speech & language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or other related field. Please include a brief ESSAY that includes a list of who you worked with each year and what areas you served in (lunch, classroom, SSR, etc.). Also, briefly tell how the Peer Coach program benefited the students/partners you worked with. Share what you gained from being a Peer Coach and what changes it made in our school. Finally, briefly tell about your future plans.
PEO Chapter EJ Scholarship - One at $500
***Minimum 3.0 GPA. This organization supports educational opportunities for women. The award is limited to female applicants who are pursuing a four year college degree or a two year vocational/technical program. In a brief essay please describe the unique contributions you, as an educated woman, can make in the workplace.
Philip & Bertha Levine Scholarship/In Memory of Nancy Sorenson - One at $850
***Upper one-third of class, excellent citizenship, character and financial need.
Randy Kivisto Memorial Scholarship - Minimum of One at $500
***Designated for a student entering the trades field through an apprenticeship, certificate or associate degree program.
Range Bank Scholarship - One at $500
***Upper one-third of class, excellent citizenship, character, and financial need.
Ray Sischo Memorial Scholarship - One at $500
***Minimum 2.0 GPA. Intended for a student entering any trade school program. Examples include: Welding, Culinary, Cosmetology, Plumbing, Electrical or HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration).
Raymond Pajula Scholarship – One at $500
***Pursuing a career in construction, building trades or related field.
Robert and Mary (Romback) Prudom Memorial Scholarship - One at $1000
***2.5 GPA or above. This scholarship is intended for a student going to a 2 or 4 year college, apprenticeship or trades field. It is meant for someone who has been involved in extra curricular activities outside of school (sports, music, work, volunteering), who has been invested in their community and who pays it forward on a regular basis. Take special care to fill out the scholarship application completely with detailed involvement, special circumstances and also note any other scholarships already awarded.
Rudy & Darley Kemppainen Scholarship Fund – One at $500
***Intended for a student in financial need.
Russo Brothers Scholarship (In memory of: Carmello Russo Jr., Francis Russo, Anthony Russo and Charles Russo) – One at $500
***Minimum 3.0 GPA or higher. Student must be attending college in the fall. Any school and any major is eligible. Must have been involved in music during your time at NHS. Write an ESSAY below describing what role music has played in your life and how it has influenced your educational choices.
Saima Kuivila Salutatorian Scholarship – One at $1,000
Saima Kuivila Education Scholarship - One at $1,000
***Designated for a strong academic student pursuing a career in education.
Sydney W. Northey Scholarship - One at $500
***Preference given to a student who will study music.
Terry Talo/Mike Trewhella Scholarship – One at $1,000
***3.2 GPA or higher. Based on positive character attributes, citizenship/community involvement, financial need preferred, yet not required, must be enrolled at MTU.
Terry Talo/Mike Trewhella Scholarship – One at $1,000
***3.2 GPA or higher. Based on positive character attributes, citizenship/community involvement, financial need preferred, yet not required, must be enrolled at Finlandia University.
The Dominic and Alice Ghiardi Scholarship Fund - Two at $500 (one male, one female)
***Minimum 2.5 GPA or higher. Participated for a minimum of 2 years in athletic program or other extra curricular program. Accepted to an accredited voc/technical school or college/university. Good character and citizenship in both school and community, caring attitude toward others, contribute to the school/community through volunteering or good deeds, leadership skills, role model. Possess honesty, integrity and a positive attitude.
Thomas F. Pellow Scholarship - One at $200
***Designated for student pursuing their education in English or Journalism.
TruNorth Federal Credit Union Scholarship - Two at $500 (One Male / One Female)
***Minimum 2.5 GPA. Member of, or child of a member of TruNorth F.C.U. Scholastic ability, intellectual potential, personal integrity, enthusiasm for learning and/or evidence of a desire to better humanity will be considered. Please type a brief ESSAY (no more than 200 words) outlining your future plans below.
Waino & Joanne Liuha Scholarship -- One at $750
***Designated for a student with true financial need.
Werner Peterson Memorial Scholarship - One at $300
***Maximum GPA of 3.5 . Scholarship open to students with a lower GPA. Open to students seeking any level of education. Student must value continued education, work ethic and community involvement. Financial need considered. Please type a brief ESSAY outlining your future plans and how education is important to them.
