The Joseph Vaughn Oratorical Competition Application 2025
Theme
  • The Theme of the oratorical contest shall be the one selected by the Oratorical Steering committee. 
  • The theme for this year is “Building Bridges: Fostering Unity in a Divided World.”
Timeline
  • February 3, 2025 Entry form submission deadline
  • February 10, 2025 Written speech submitted to Oratorical Chair. Email submissions to losgrant06@gmail.com 
  • March 9, 2025–Preliminary Competition (if needed, more than 15 contestants), Zoom Session
  • March 17-21, 2025 Feedback Session, Zoom Session
  • March 29, 2025–Finalists compete in Joseph Vaughn Oratorical Competition,

 Organization

  • The speech prepared by the contestant must be original.
  • The speech must be typewritten, double-spaced, using standard college English.
  • The speech must be logical, correct in form and content and must address the theme established by the Oratorical Steering committee.
  • The speech must show a command of vocabulary.
  • The speech must be submitted in writing to the Committee Chairman for approval and preliminary scoring by March 9th.

Timing (Final Competition)

For those entrants selected to compete in the final round of the oratorical competition, the following rules and guidelines will apply:

  •  A speaker will be disqualified from the contest if he/she speaks less than 4 minutes and 30 seconds, or more than 7 minutes and 30 seconds.
  • The timers shall be seated in such a position that warning signals will be clearly visible to the speakers, but not obvious to the audience.  The green and amber-warning signals will remain up for one minute.
  • Speakers should not start their speech until completion of introductory applause.  Timing shall begin with the first word the contestant utters.
  • Timers shall warn the speaker with a green sign after he/she has spoken for five (5) minutes.  An amber sign will be turned on after six (6) minutes and the red sign will be after seven (7) minutes and will remain on until the conclusion of the speech.

All contestants will receive a certificate, recognizing their participation in this event. Contestants who do not place as a finalist will receive $25.
