Remembering James W. Vaupel

James W. Vaupel (1945–2022) was a prominent demographer who founded several institutions and networks that are now central for the field. Many friends, colleagues, and students already started writing their warm memories and their key life events connected with Jim. We are setting up this form and an associated website to provide a platform for these dear texts to live and be known. Please share your memories of meeting Jim, collaborating with him. If possible we ask you to write with a focus on personal lively sketches, anecdotes, small stories – all to give a living person representation, not a bronze statue. Let’s collect memories of Jim as lively as he always was.

We will share your stories with us, we'll put them on a this public website:
remembering-james-vaupel.org

If you prefer to send anything more elaborated than simple text, for examples text including memorable photos, you are welcome to send them to remembering.james.vaupel@gmail.com. In case you send an email, please fill this form anyways and just write "sent email" in the 'Your story' section.

Cordially,
Jim's colleagues at CPop SDU

Your story TITLE (optional)
This is optional, however we kindly ask you to give your story a brief title. Jim used to say "You should spend one third of your time working on a paper choosing a good title and composing a great opening phrase!"

❗️❗️❗️ NOTE: ALL THE FIELDS BELOW ARE OPTIONAL
You can send in the form without filling them, but we would much appreciate if you help us collect the timestamped data to create the Lexis visualization ❤️
When did your story happen (if applicable)
Please consider adding the date of your main story, this may come useful for the visual representation of the whole collection.   Please put at least year (YYYY) or the full specific date in YYYY–MM–DD format, for example: 1983 or 2017-11-06
Your date of birth (or just YEAR)
Needed to draw your lifeline in the visualization (see below). Please put at least year (YYYY) or the full specific date in YYYY–MM–DD format, for example: 1983 or 2017-11-06
Additional idea – Lexis lifelines visualization
For the website we want to produce an interactive Lexis visualization with your lifelines each marking several key events interacting with Jim. As we envision it (see the sketch below), this will be a Lexis surface with many many lifelines and several key events in each, viewers would be able to interactively filter the lifelines by persons (maybe some categories, suggestions welcome) and see the events by hovering over the dots.

We ask for your help (optional, of course) to populate this dataset, see the optional text forms below.
