We live in a dynamic community. Unlike ancient cities in Asia, Africa, and Europe, ours was a transient aboriginal and sleepy rural Euro-American farming community until the development of the anthracite coal industry. Since the late 18th century, people have moved to our region and shared their values and cultures, as they supported a new energy source for the United States. The story and culture of the region and the exhibits of Anthracite Heritage Museum reflect the predominance of European immigration. However, the story of the region is more complicated. This place had been occupied for 10,000 years and for as long as there have been people here, there have been people from many more places and people who share different social and cultural values than traditionally represented in the Anthracite Heritage Museum. We want to expand the museum’s interpretation of our region to include more diverse stories. We want to know the story of your family or and your community. We want to understand how you came to settle here and how the industrial culture impacted or influenced you and your community.
