Course Description:
This course will provide candidates with opportunities to demonstrate their
knowledge of methods and materials for teaching the science of reading.
This course is designed for candidates i to deepen their understanding of the
science of reading and its application in the classroom. The course emphasizes
the five essential components of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics,
fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Through a blend of theoretical research
and practical application, candidates will develop, teach, and refine literacy
lessons that align with these core components.
This course was created based
on The Georgia Early Literacy Act (House Bill 538).

GaTAPP Students:
All GaTAPP students are
required to take this Foundations of Literacy: Building Awareness Course.
GaTAPP students who teach
elementary (P-5), middle school reading (4-8), or special education (P-12) must
also take Foundations of Literacy: Demonstrating Essential Knowledge.
