VISION 2018 Mentee Application
Dear Student,

Thank you for your interest in Cal VSA’s VISION! VISION is an all-expense paid 4-day, 3-night program for high school students (Grades 9-12) in California (if you are from outside of California you will have to pay for your own transportation). VISION will take place from Thursday, April 26th to Sunday, April 29th, 2018 at the University of California, Berkeley campus.

VISION, a mentorship program under Vietnamese Student Association at the University of California, Berkeley, recognizes and understands the significance of the historical, cultural and contemporary issues the Vietnamese and Vietnamese American communities face. VISION aims to foster and encourage high school students to take away what they learn and gain from our program to become leaders of their own communities. Fundamentally, VISION empowers students to embrace their individual identities as well as the heritage of the Vietnamese culture. Applicants will be chosen based on their interest and enthusiasm as well as their potential to grow as leaders. To determine whether an applicant fulfills the criteria, we will take into consideration only the quality of your personal statements and never your GPA. PLEASE DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED if you are not ethnically, culturally, or even identity as Vietnamese. The issues that we will discuss will apply to a wide range of individuals and not just the Vietnamese community. Therefore, we encourage students from all different backgrounds (and not just Vietnamese) to apply. Also, you do not need to be accepted into UC Berkeley or plan to attend UC Berkeley to apply.

As an organization supported by the three pillars of Academics, Culture, and Community, the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) at UC Berkeley strives to empower its members to become leaders of their communities in order to preserve the history and heritage of Vietnamese culture for future generations. Initially formed in 1970, we have undergone various transformations to adapt to the changing needs and objectives of our members. In order to expand our community beyond the boundaries of Berkeley and to better the Vietnamese community on-campus, off-campus, as well as overseas, we are looking to you! VISION is meant to be an opportunity for you to not only meet students from many different backgrounds but to also find and discover yourself through discussion, open dialogue, and interaction with VISION participants.

VISION was established in 2012 and since then, the program has had the privilege of hosting over 600 participants in our mentorship program. We have seen our mentees, mentors and volunteers use the experiences and connections they made through our program to grow into the open-minded individuals they are today. For this reason, we have decided to center this year’s theme on fostering and developing these connections. And so, we present to you the theme of VISION 2018: Bloom. This weekend-long mentorship program will focus on creating collaborative and empathetic environments through discussion-based workshops that highlight both our failures and successes. We will explore how our unique backgrounds have influenced the decisions we make as individuals and as members of our communities. Finally, we will look forward by reflecting on these different moments in our lives while drawing the parallels that affirm our resilience and our ability to continue growing. We extend this invitation to you, as we know that your participation in VISION 2018 will cultivate a space for bonds to form and to ultimately bloom into long-lasting relationships.

We encourage you to apply to our program! The following application is DUE on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 at 11:59 pm PST.

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us!

All our best,

Trinh Le and Michael Bui
