Letter to the Democratic Party of Hawaii

To: The Democratic Party of Hawaii

From: Concerned Voters of Hawaii

We, the undersigned, ask that you withdraw your federal lawsuit seeking to enact closed primaries here in Hawaii. We are independents, Democrats and Republicans who believe that all voters must be able to participate in the process if our democracy is to work effectively.

Hawaii’s constitution states: “No person shall be required to declare a party preference or nonpartisanship as a condition of voting in any primary…” Closing the primaries would instantly create hundreds of thousands of second class citizens in Hawaii, independents who do not want to join a political party in order to make their voice heard.

Partisanship is doing so much damage to our country. Your decision to seek a court decision to ban independents from tax-payer funded primary elections is an example of the “put the party first” attitude that so many voters find objectionable.

We call on you to put partisan interests aside and do what is best for the people of Hawaii.

Sincerely,
