ACL Professional Conduct Committee Volunteer Application
The ACL Executive Board is establishing procedures to follow when a complaint is raised under the ACL’s anti-harassment policy (https://www.aclweb.org/adminwiki/index.php?title=Anti-Harassment_Policy). These procedures call for the creation of a Professional Conduct Committee, consisting of approximately 12 ACL members who will have the role of fielding complaints, working towards informal mediation where appropriate, and carrying out investigations resulting in formal sanctions when necessary. Committee members will serve three-year (renewable) terms, and will be selected by representatives of the ACL Executive. They will be required to participate in training in mediation and complaint-resolution methods and techniques that will be offered at forthcoming ACL events.

ACL will provide training for Professional Conduct Committee members in mediation techniques in 2018 at the ACL meeting in Melbourne and at EMNLP in Brussels, the day before the start of the conference. (Volunteers will be responsible for their own travel expenses.) In order for the committee to function effectively, it must include a diversity of perspectives and experiences. In addition to questions about your understanding of the role of anti-harassment policies and this committee, this form accordingly asks you various demographic questions.

Information collected in this form will be stored in a Google drive account associated with the University of Washington and viewed by Graeme Hirst, Emily M. Bender, and Anne Grant as well as potentially by members of the ACL Executive Committee. It will not be shared beyond that.

Minoritized status
At the level of an international organization, it is unclear what categories pertaining to race or ethnicity are appropriate to consider. Accordingly, we are using the distinction minoritized (treated as a minority) / not minoritized (treated as normative/majority). In addition, we are interested in other types of minoritization such as sexual orientation.
