What is Breakthrough San Francisco?
Breakthrough San Francisco is an educational non-profit that supports young people in San Francisco on the path to college and trains outstanding college students for education careers.

What is the role of a Volunteer Leadership Participant (VLP)?
VLPs at Breakthrough San Francisco are current Breakthrough students and students from local high schools who serve as leaders and role models to Breakthrough 5th-8th graders during the academically intensive summer program. VLPs support staff and teachers by running much of the behind-the-scenes work at Breakthrough. Select VLPs will have the opportunity to help in academic and elective classes based on their interests. During the after-school tutoring program, VLPs help to supervise students and provide support to those that need extra attention and help with their homework.

What do VLPs do at Breakthrough?
Each VLP brings a unique outlook to our program. Throughout your summer experience, you will assist with the following:
• Decorate the school before students arrive to enhance school spirit
• Manage and run the free lunch program
• Assist a Breakthrough teacher in the classroom
• Tutor students in the Breakthrough after-school tutoring program
• Work with students individually on their class work and homework assignments
• Help students with organization of their materials (homework binders, planners, and backpacks)
• Supervise students during All School Meeting (ASM), lunch, recess, or after school
• Oversee student use of the library
• Lead students through fun Breakthrough cheers during ASM
• Plan and carry out fun and educational activities
• Work with teachers to organize special events such as Field Day, Spirit Week, Community Day, and Celebration
• Document summer highlights with digital imagery
• Create summer publications (newsletters, flyers, etc.)
• Provide tours for visitors
• Assist with administrative work (making copies, filing, making phone calls, etc.)
• Help to enforce the norms and expectations at Breakthrough

What is expected of all VLPs?
• Encourage good study habits
• Model good behavior
• Build personal relationships with students
• Maintain high standards of professionalism
• Participate thoughtfully in ongoing professional development trainings
• Take positive risks
• Be open to feedback
• Collaborate with other members of the Breakthrough program, including teachers, instructional coaches, and
• Be an active and enthusiastic member of the Breakthrough community

What are we looking for?
• Current high school students (9th-12th grade)
• Ability to commit to entire summer program (seven weeks)
• Great organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to take initiative
• Applicants interested in education, working with young people, and/or community service
• Applicants with prior Breakthrough experience are highly desirable

What is the commitment?
The VLP commitment is June 17 – August 2. In addition to attending the VLP training week (June 17 - June 21), VLPs will commit to our six-week summer program (June 24 – August 2). VLPs will volunteer at Breakthrough every day of the week (Monday-Friday) from 11:00am to 5:30pm with some earlier mornings and later evenings during training week. In addition, VLPs must attend our end-of-summer Celebration on the evening of August 1.

When is the application due and how do I submit?
Priority Deadline (For Breakthrough Students only) Friday, March 22, 2019*
General Deadline (Reviewed on a rolling basis) Friday, May 3, 2019

*Please Note: Breakthrough may be able to secure funding to provide partial compensation for Breakthrough student volunteers this summer. Priority will be given to students who meet the priority deadline, whose families demonstrate financial need, and to our older students.
