Raise the Bar Data Collection Volunteer Interest Form
Thank you for your interest in our research. Below is information on who we are and information about the commitment.

The Raise the Bar (RTB) initiative is a community-led initiative to combat sexual assault through the implementation of violence prevention programs and advocating for legislation in downtown Santa Barbara and Isla Vista.

What is the purpose of this project?
We will be surveying patrons outside of local Santa Barbara bars or at Bill's Bus (pickup location in Isla Vista) about drink spiking in the Downtown Santa Barbara area. The data you help collect will be used to inform training and practices in local bars and may ultimately result in legislation that addresses the needs of the Santa Barbara community to prevent drink spiking, sexual assault, and related issues. We need committed volunteers to go into the field and collect quality data from these people.

What will I need to do?
To volunteer with us, you have to be at least 18 years of age or older.
You will need to volunteer a maximum of 6 hours of your time, spread across two to three weeks in January. This includes:
- 1.5-hour training of research training and rape prevention education
- 2-hour data collection sessions, where you will spend 2 hours at a designated location and attending Bill's Bus that takes patrons to and from Isla Vista and downtown Santa Barbara. Your help will be needed for 2-3 of these surveying shifts, for a total of 6 hours.

What does the timeline look like?

In early December, you will attend the 1-hour training.
  • Dates: 12/2 (Tue) or 12/3 (Wed) (only need to attend one day)
  • Time & Location: 5:30 PM -7:00 PM @ Pardall Center
  • Commitment: 1 hour
In mid- to late-January, you will help collect data on-site.
  • Dates: 1/15-1/17 or 1/22-1/24 or 1/29-1/31 (Thu-Sat; only need to attend 3 different days)
  • Time & location: 10:30 pm - 12:30 am @ Bill's Bus and outside of downtown bars
  • Commitment: 6 hours

What will I get out of this experience?
For each shift you attend, you will get a free meal ticket for the following restaurants in an Isla Vista establishment (so you can earn up to 3 free meals!). Aside from this perk, you will also be contributing to a climate of safety in downtown bars and gain some valuable research experience and field work.

This project is led by Standing Together to End Sexual Assault (STESA), a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating all forms of sexual violence in our community.
