Photography-in-the-Park (September 12, 2015)

A Photography-in-the-Park event on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, is being sponsored by the Twin Cities Area Council of Camera Clubs (TCACCC) and hosted by the Fort Snelling State Park Camera Club. This free event is for members of camera clubs associated with the TCACCC and up to one guest - eligible clubs are listed below. Seating is limited for some sessions, so please register as early as possible using the form below.

Vehicle check-in begins at 8 am at the entrance to Fort Snelling State Park next to the main ranger station building at the bottom of the hill. Bring your camera, charged batteries, memory cards, pen/pencil/notepad and bag lunch (there are no lunch facilities near-by). Wear appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes. This is a rain or shine event.

Minnesota State Park Sticker *
A current Minnesota State Park Sticker is required for admittance.  If you do not have a sticker, you will be provided with a one-time-use sticker, courtesy of TCACCC. ($5 value)

Dakota Language
Harlan LaFontaine is a Dakota language teacher who uses the photographs of the Fort Snelling Camera Club as a way to teach the language.  He feels that language learners respond to photographs of an assortment of birds and animals more readily than simply using text.  When the text is combined with exciting photography, plus an audio component, language learning becomes much more engaging.  Mr. LaFontaine will teach Dakota words and phrases utilizing this interesting audio-visual method.  (Presenter: Harlan LaFontaine)
Deer Walk (7:15 a.m.)
Checkj-in at the park entrance ranger station, then depart promptly at 7:15 am, following Dan and Mary to parking for the deer walk.  This is a great opportunity to possibly "meet" and photograph one of the whitetail families that call the park home. You may also have the opportunity to see and photograph one of the bucks in the park that has been featured on the covers of national magazines.  (Presenters: Dan and Mary Drehr)
Dragonflies
Digital Dragonflies (in an analog world), a presentation about learning to identify some of the common dragonflies and damselflies found in Minnesota.  (Presenter: John Arthur)

Isle Royale National Park
Eye of the Wolf: Planning a photo adventure to Isle Royale National Park  Historical background about Isle Royale National Park will be presented, how it is different from other parks, ways to get to and visit the island, what gear to pack, and things to consider when packing your photography gear.   (Presenter: Quinn Kolb)
Nature Walk
Fort Snelling's resident naturalist will lead participants on a tour through part of Fort Snelling State Park. You will have several opportunities for taking photographs of nature and wildlife, and will learn some of the area history along the way.   (Presenter: Kao Thao, Park Naturalist)
Novice Wildlife Q&A
Session topics determined by participants - bring your beginning wildlife photography questions and we'll provide the answers!  This will be an informal conversation related to Nature Photography.  Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions on a broad range of topics, including:  finding and photographing wildlife, exposure, composition, equipment, photo processing, printing, and selling photography.   Expect a lively discussion and the mutual sharing of information.   (Presenter: John Anderson)
Photographing Fort Snelling State Park
Comprehensive overview of Fort Snelling State Park, across a range of areas including wildlife, flora and landscape photography, across the seasons, as told through the collected images of the members of the FSSP Camera Club. Participants will come away with an understanding of the valuable opportunities the park provides for those interested in experiencing nature through photography.  (Presenter: John Anderson)
Raptor Center
Come see live raptors from the U of M Raptor Center, including a bald eagle.  Educational presentation with photo opportunities afterwards. Two presentations will be given with an hour in between for you to photograph these beautiful birds against the backdrop of Fort Snelling State Park.  This event will be held at Shelter A and seating will be limited.  Be prepared to stand or bring your own camp/lawn chair.  (Presenter: U of M Raptor Center)


Urban Wildlife
A discussion and presentation of wildlife found mainly in the Twin Cities - how populations have increased and where the animals live. Photography will range from places like Fort Snelling State Park, to inside our homes and yards, and city parks, large species to tiny species. including birds, mammals, and insects.  (Presenter: Gordon Dietzman)

Upper Post Tour
Learn about and take pictures of Fort Snelling Upper Post. A behind-the-fence tour will be given of the Upper Fort overlooking Fort Snelling State Park and the Mississippi River. You will learn about the history of the Upper Post, its future, and have opportunities for photographing one of the most historic locations in the Twin Cities.  (Presenter: Larry Peterson, Park Manager)
Taxidermy Photography (Self-guided, open 11:00am-2:30pm)
Just for FUN!  Several taxidermy animals (fox/owl/possum/bobcat) will be placed along the path to the Raptor Center show at Shelter A.  Perfect for practicing composition and testing out different camera settings while shooting in the shade/mixed light of the woods. The animal mounts are old and show signs of classroom handling, so you'll need to get creative with your photography.  If you photograph all the animals, you can enter to win a small recognition prize from the FSSP gift shop for your efforts - winner announced at 3:30 p.m. after the last session adjourns.
