Grinnell Alumni Externship Program

Thank you for your interest in participating in the Grinnell Alumni Externship Program!

This program is defined by a 3 to 5 day job shadowing experience during spring break (March 15 to March 30, 2014) where a current Grinnell student will visit an alum's workplace, observe the workings of her/his day, attend meetings, conduct informational interviews with colleagues, and engage in any other suitable activities that will provide them a glimpse into her/his profession. When possible, we ask alums to provide students with a homestay, to help them witness the challenge of balancing work, life, and personal commitments.

Students who have chosen to participate in the Externship Program are interested and motivated to learn from a career exploration experience. These students are typically first and second year students who are deciding about their major and/or career path. Students gain an understanding of how their academic preparation can be used in work settings and also get a glimpse of the extent of their knowledge and skills. They gather information and perspectives that are helpful in making career choices and/or planning for graduate or professional education.

On page 2, you will find a Memo of Understanding outlining your responsibilities as an extern host as well as Grinnell College's responsibilities. If you agree to participate, please initial at the conclusion of the agreement.
