TAC Field Trip Planning Form
Please fill out this form so we can help you plan a wonderful field trip to the Textile Arts Center!

Our Brooklyn location only is available for field trips on weekdays preferably in the morning hours.  Cost is $10 per student and includes several demonstrations, a lively lesson and discussion, and a full hour of hands on work in pairs or small groups.  Minimum of 10 students, maximum of 30.

We offer two activities to choose from:

WEAVING:  Step back in time on this field trip and try making your own fabric.  Students will weave in pairs on full-size looms like the looms that were in use before the Industrial Revolution. At the end of the visit, you'll leave with woven swatches to take back to the classroom.

DYEING:  This class is a fun and exciting introduction to identifying native plants and using them to dye cloth. The lesson focuses on the Indigo plant, a mysterious color that has been documented since the 4th century B.C.  Indigo, unlike most other natural dyes does not require a mordant (fixative) in order to adhere to fiber or fabric. The magic of indigo does however require a unique process in which all oxygen must be removed from the vat.  To do this naturally without the use of chemicals, we use an organic method safe for children and safe for the environment.  This visit opens students' eyes to the natural bounty around them and the need to protect it through practices that support and promote sustainability and environmental responsibility.
