WA Neuroscience Roadshow: Esperance

Western Australia’s leading neuroscientists have come together with the help of Inspiring WA to host an evening filled with all things about the brain!

Join us on the 27th October 2023 from 4:30pm - 7:00pm at the Esperance Civic Centre (Reception Room).

What to expect:

Hands-on Neuroscience Activities (4:30pm - 6:00pm)

Take on the role of a neuroscientist as we offer a range of activities to engage your curiosity about the brain from the level of cells to the whole organ. During this interactive session, you will have the chance to:

  • Look at brain cells: Take a closer look at the building blocks of the brain. Using microscopes, we will examine a range of different cell types within the brain and get an understanding of their structure and function.
  • Measure your own brain activity: Witness the electrical signals that occur during your thoughts and actions using specialised recording equipment.
  • Explore 3D models of brains: Get the chance to observe the diversity of brains in the animal kingdom and learn about the development of different specialised brain regions to complements an animal's needs and survival.

Public Lecture by Dr Sarah Hellewell (6:00pm - 6:40pm)

Following the hands-on activities, join us for a talk by a prominent neuroscientist, Dr Sarah Hellewell, who will be delving into "The Neuroscience of Concussion". Dr. Hellewell will be shedding light on the complex mechanisms occuring when the brain sustains an injury and provide insight on the current work that she does within this area. Q&A Session (6:40pm - 7:00pm)

Raise your hand and join in a stimulating discussion with a panel of neuroscientists in our 'ask the experts' Q&A session. Here you will be given the opportunity to pick the brains of scientists and ask them your questions about the brain and nervous system. Our scientist have had great careers in the field of neuroscience and you can also ask them about what scientists actually do as a job and the amazing opportunities it provides.

Don't miss out on this unique event to hear about all of the fantastic neuroscience happening in WA and get insight from a range of individuals who have had extensive experience and careers in science!
