Incidence of canine megaesophagus (ME) cases 2011-2016
BACKGROUND
In the spring of 2015 Latvian Association of Small Animal Practitioners (LSAPS) recognized and reported to FECAVA unusually high number of canine megaesophagus (ME) cases in Latvia. As as result, two studies have been conducted -- a retrospective (dating from April 2014 till April 2015) and prospective study (started in May 2015). In total, we have registered and confirmed 140 ME cases in dogs in Latvia that have occurred from April 2014 till December 2015. Only the ME cases diagnosed and confirmed by X-ray were included in the total ME case count therefore real number of ME cases likely is much higher. According to our prospective study we estimate that there may be ~100 cases of ME per year now in Latvia with average of 8-9 ME cases per month.Various sources reveal different data about dog population in Latvia and numbers mentioned range from 160 000 to 260 000.
