WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
This is a call from the ancient traditions of our faiths, a recognition for a need for houses of worship to serve as a refuge for the runaway slaves, for the conscientious objectors, for the refugees escaping wars and tyranny, and for all those fleeing oppression and persecution.
Once again, Sanctuary grows strong among communities of faith, as we stand in solidarity with immigrants facing immoral and unjust deportation policies. The time is now, there is no turning our backs on the reality that the coming policies will create.
We find ourselves entering a new phase of U.S. history in which the politics of fear stoke an atmosphere of racism and xenophobia. The new Administration has pledged to target, detain, and deport immigrants at unprecedented levels. As people of faith and conscience, we will take the initiative to defend and protect families and safeguard human rights. Our moral obligation is to promote dignity and act in complete resistance to destructive and unjust policy proposals.
By signing this pledge, we are dedicating ourselves to educate and activate our faith communities, to intensify our responses, and to lift up the voices of immigrant leaders and their families. We will not fail to speak out against discrimination and we will clear the road for the most marginalized in this country.
We are ready now to open the doors of our sacred spaces and accompany those facing detention and deportation. We support those answering the call to provide radical Sanctuary in schools, hospitals, college campuses, community centers, and in private family homes. We will work with partner organizations to create sacred space of Sanctuary wherever and whenever it is needed.
Let Oregon be a a state of refuge, safety, and Sanctuary...
