Everyone has a climate change story - Climate change is underway in every community on Earth. You do not need to be a scientist or policy expert in order to share your climate story. You just need to care about the place you live to share your observations of the changes around you and how you are responding to them. Our stories will connect us through understanding the effect the climate crisis is having on our lives and will inspire us to take action to confront the climate crisis. Sharing your story might even be fun as you build connections with other people and other places!
Join us in this Storytelling Workshop - Six virtual sessions with climate activists, Teaching Artists, and educators will lead high school and college students from across Maine in crafting personal climate stories as we share our understanding of our place in the climate crisis.
All Session are on Mondays from 6:00-7:30pm
Sessions 1-6: October 24, October 31, November 7, November 14, (We will take a break for Thanksgiving week.) November 28, December 5
What is a Climate Story? How do our personal experiences fit into the greater picture of climate change? How can this be shared? We will hear examples of climate stories via video, song, writing, from singer/song writer, Zak Kendall of Golden Oak; a young Telling Room artist; and others. The Telling Room Teaching Artists will get our creative juices flowing with prompts and storytelling games.
We'll examine narrative structure, head data versus heart data, and explore other writing tools as we develop our climate pieces. As a group, we'll practice the art of giving helpful feedback, then revise and polish our pieces to completion, preparing for a final evening of sharing stories. We hope you’ll join us!
Stipends - $180 per participant. Each youth participant is eligible to receive a stipend for attending the six sessions and sharing their finished story.
