Description: K-5 teachers are charged with the heavy load of implementing a vast array of standards. Fitting these standards in an already packed school day/year and teaching social science with fidelity presents some unique challenges and raises many questions such as: How do the Illinois Learning Standards for Social Science connect to the concepts and content currently being taught? What adjustments may need to be made? Where does social science fit into the already-crowded day? What does inquiry look like in an elementary classroom? This session will address these questions and allow participants to discover how to begin designing a quality social studies curriculum in an already packed classroom.

The afternoon of this full-day training will be a chance to begin to incorporate what you’ve learned into your classroom and network with other colleagues from the area. Planning and work time will be provided with the opportunity to break up by grade level to collaborate and begin planning a unit to use this school year. Presenters will be available to provide guidance and answer questions as participants work. To maximize the effectiveness of your afternoon, please bring or have in mind curricular materials that you’d like to adapt into a unit of inquiry.
