PHUL Rules Quiz

It is very important that each team leader is familiar with these rules, as well as the rest of the PHUL and USA Ultimate rules.

If you are not confident about an answer, we strongly urge you to visit the PHUL and USAU rules (links below) before you answer.

Each leader must score at least 10 out of 13 questions correct. If you do not, you will be notified and asked to take the quiz again. Everyone will receive the answers once the quiz is complete.

1. (PHUL Rule): If a team plays a game and does not have anyone over the age of 25 present, the game will be considered a forfeit. *

a) True: Each team must have an adult over 25 at every game.

b) False: A team must have a 'Coach' at every game or else the game is considered a forfeit.

c) False: Each team must have an adult present at each game. This adult must either be 1) a PHUL-approved coach, 2) a USAU-approved chaperone, or 3) an adult 25 or older.

d) False: A team may have an adult under 25 as long as they are over 21.

2. (PHUL Rule): You show up at your home field at 2:30pm for a 3pm game. You are ready to play by 2:50pm. The other team is not there yet. You start assessing points while you wait for them on the sideline. Is this correct? *

a) Yes. The other team should be there already. You should award your team one point every 5 minutes that they are not there.

b) Yes, but you must wait until 3pm (not 2:50) and then assess one point every 5 minutes.

c) No. You must wait until 3pm, have at least 6 players on the line (7 for Div I) ready to play, and then assess one point every 5 minutes.

d) No. You must give the other team until 3:15pm in case they got lost coming to your field, and another 15 minutes to warm up.

3. (PHUL Rule): You just finished half-time, and the score is 8-6. It looks like it might storm, but you get 3 more points in before the weather forces you to end the game. You decide to reschedule the game, starting at 0-0, for next week. Is this okay? *

a) Yes. You can decide to play this game again at any time.

b) Yes. You can decide to play this game again, but it must be within 72 hours of the first game.

c) No. The game should be scheduled again, but the score should start at 10-7.

d) No. As long as one team reaches 8 points, the game should be recorded with the current final score (in this case: 10-7).

4. On a pull, the disc lands in the middle of the opposing end-zone. Where should the offense put the disc into play? *

a) Where the disc landed.

b) Where the disc landed, but walked up to the front end-zone line.

c) At the brick mark (20 yards from the end-zone, in the middle of the field).

5. Adam is 8 feet away from his person when he is forced to run around another player. He calls a pick. What happens next? *

a) The offense is at fault; play stops and the defender regains defensive position wherever he wants.

b) The offense is at fault; play stops and the defender regains defensive positioning that is relative to the position which he was in before he was picked. This is because he was within 10 feet of his person.

c) The offense is at fault; play stops and the disc is given to the other team.

d) Nothing; a player must be physically struck in order to call a legitimate pick.

6. On the play above (#5), the mark had just finished saying ‘stalling 8’ when play stopped. When both teams are ready to resume play, what does the marker say after the disc is checked in? *

b) The marker drops 2 seconds because of the pick call, and starts at ‘stalling 7’.

7. Megan calls a foul on the mark as she is pivoting. After calling the foul, she begins her throwing motion and throws an incomplete pass. What is the result of the play? *

a) There is a foul; play stops and the disc goes back to the thrower.

b) The defender knows that she bumped the thrower, is a good sport, and gives the disc back to the thrower.

c) The offensive player closest to the disc picks up the disc and puts it into play.

d) Turnover; the foul that the thrower called is not a foul that caused the incomplete pass. By throwing the disc, the thrower is ignoring the original foul call. The thrower should have stopped play after making the call.

8. Joel jumps vertically, near the sideline (in-bounds), and catches the disc while his feet are in the air. While in the air, a defender pushes him out of bounds before he lands. The defense calls it a turnover. Is this correct? *

a) No; the disc goes back to the thrower.

b) Yes; the receiver needs to make contact in-bounds after catching the disc.

c) No; it is a force-out foul made by the defender and it is ruled as a catch. The receiver puts the disc into play at the sideline where he was forced out.

9. Kate makes a grab in the end-zone. She doesn’t realize that she is in the end-zone and throws a completed pass to Amanda, who proceeds to ground-check the disc. The goal is awarded. Is this correct? *

a) No. It IS a goal because Kate was in the end-zone when she received the pass; the result of her throw does not matter. A ground check, however, signifies that the disc is being put IN to play, which is not correct in this situation.

b) No. It is NOT a goal because Kate traveled, which is a violation. The disc goes back to Kate who then must check the disc in at the goal line to resume play.

c) Yes. A ground check in the end-zone signifies a goal.

10. Jason dives for a disc and catches it at the same time as it touches the grass. Jason: *

a) Keeps the disc because the disc didn't completely land on the grass.

b) Keeps the disc because he caught the disc before it hit the GROUND.

c) Turned the disc over because if the disc touches the grass/ground before or while a player catches it, it is a turnover.

11. After a pull, the defense (pulling team) may not touch the disc before it hits the ground, but someone on the offense (receiving team) may touch the disc while it is in the air in order to slow it down. Is this correct? *

a) Yes. The offense can tap the disc in the air to slow the disc down to make it easier to catch.

b) No. No one can touch the disc before it touches the ground.

c) No. The offense must let the disc touch the ground OR they can choose to catch it. The defense can touch it while it is in the air, but cannot catch it.

d) No. The offense must let the disc touch the ground OR they can choose to catch it. The defense cannot touch the disc until the receiving team touches it first.

12. Which of the below statements are valid ‘travel’ calls? *

a) Melissa catches the disc, takes 4 steps in a straight line (following her momentum) in order to slow down and stop, establishes a pivot foot, and then throws.

b) Gabe catches the disc on an in-cut, takes 2 steps as he changes direction and turns to face the end-zone, establishes a pivot foot, and throws a goal.

c) Laura realizes that she is about to catch the disc right outside of the end-zone. She decides, instead of catching it, to tap the disc up in the air so that when she catches it, she will then be in the end-zone for a goal.

d) Greg makes a catch while running and jumping. He lands, takes 1 more step to slow down, and throws a pass before establishing a pivot.

13. Cherise catches the disc inbounds by the sideline and her momentum carries her out of bounds. She runs back to the spot where her body crossed the line to be out of bounds and throws a completed pass. Is this correct? *

No. A player contacting the out-of-bounds area is out-of-bounds, resulting in a turnover.

Yes. As long as the player’s first point of ground contact was completely in-bounds, the disc is put into play at the spot on the edge of the playing field where the player first went out-of-bounds.

No. After establishing a pivot at the appropriate spot on the field, the thrower must touch the disc to the ground before putting it into play.

No. To continue play after the disc becomes out-of-bounds, a member of the team gaining possession of the disc must carry it to, and put it into play at, the spot on the central zone nearest to where the disc contacted a defensive player.
