Dear Parents,
Day 2 of the California State Team (CST) tryouts will feature our first Round Robin Tournament, where players will compete in structured, high-level games designed to further evaluate their abilities. Based on the assessments from Day 1, athletes will be placed into four balanced teams—Blue, Gold, White, and Red—each consisting of one goalie and twelve field players to ensure maximum playing time. Every team will play three games, giving players multiple opportunities to showcase their skills in different game scenarios.
Each game will follow a controlled, quarter-by-quarter format to assess specific aspects of player performance. In the 1st quarter, teams will implement a 2-3-4 drop defense, emphasizing outside shooting, disciplined shot-blocking, and goalie evaluations. The 2nd quarter will shift to a full press defense, with offensive focus on driving plays and 2-meter positioning to assess individual talent and physicality. The 3rd quarter will introduce split defense strategies, encouraging players to either shoot off the drop or create opportunities for 2-meter entries. Finally, in the 4th quarter, coaches will identify the team’s top three players and run isolation plays to evaluate decision-making under pressure. Between games, players will participate in a midday break with food and a chalk talk session, allowing teams to discuss strategy and receive valuable feedback from coaches. We look forward to an intense and rewarding day of competition!
