Thanks for your interest in becoming a volunteer with Church Clarity! We're excited for you to join our growing team of volunteers
What: Becoming a Church Clarity Volunteer requires an internet connection and a few hours of free time at least every other week. We will train you in our methodology and investigative methods for scoring church websites that are submitted to us. We don’t require a lot of hours, but we do require a baseline level of reliability and consistent scoring from our volunteers. Keep in mind that there will be triggering content present from the churches we score to church content that is posted in Slack (our communication platform). If you don’t feel ready to handle this kind of exposure, then CC may not be the right fit for you.
Who: Currently, anyone can be a volunteer for Church Clarity as long as they become Verified Clear and agree that #ClarityisReasonable. So although Church Clarity as an organization maintains an affirming and egalitarian policy, we do not require volunteers to share the same policy-positions. This creates the potential for difficult conversations among our volunteer team; if this feels too unsafe for you, then volunteering might not be the best route for you. There are over 20+ volunteers who live across the United States primarily. We communicate via Slack.
How: While our doors are open to anyone who agrees that churches should clearly state their policies on their websites, we do have specific community norms. The first is that people must use pronouns that people designate for themselves. Honoring what people want to be called is important to all of us. The second is that we do not tolerate attacks on someone for their identities or beliefs, or actions that lead to a hostile environment for them.
Why: Many volunteers come to us thinking that Church Clarity is here to promote affirming or egalitarian churches, and shame non-affirming or non-egalitarian ones. While each person has their personal views, that is not the main mission of Church Clarity.
Clarity is what we prioritize above all. We aren’t here to promote one set of policies or theology over another as an organization, even though we all have our own personal beliefs and convictions. That means clear: non-affirming churches are “equal” (when it comes to our organization’s mission) to “clear: affirming” churches. Same thing for egalitarian.
Why do we care about clarity? Because when there is an asymmetry of information (churches hold information, attendees don’t), there is an asymmetry of power. Which is a recipe for abuse, deception, betrayal, etc. We are ultimately interested in re-distributing power from churches to the people so that people can make fully informed decisions about which churches to go to. People are adults; they know what’s best for them. We give them the full information they need to make that decision.
