Human Rights Pen Pals Application
Dear Future Human Rights Pen Pal,

Human Rights Pen Pals is a grassroots organization that began as a project of the Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity coalition (PHSS). PHSS was organized in June 2011 to support people in California's solitary confinement cells organizing peacefully to demand major changes in the system of long-term solitary confinement in California's prisons.

Human Rights Pen Pals works to facilitate correspondence through letter writing between people inside and outside the prison walls who share these same fundamental values. All of our incarcerated pen pals are or were in solitary confinement in California men’s prisons. We believe in human rights for all human beings. We do not offer legal services, social services, or dating services. We do not match pen pals based on race, gender, sex, sexual orientation, religion, or any similar identity trait. Because we do not discriminate in these ways, it is highly likely that pen pals will be matched with someone who is different from themselves. What we offer is an opportunity for people to develop mutually respectful and educational dialogues by letter.

We believe that the power of pen and paper can transcend prison walls.

If you are interested in becoming a Human Rights Pen Pal according to the values of our organization, please fill out the following application in its entirety. This application guides us in matching you with an inside pen pal.

We currently have a long list of imprisoned pen pals seeking a correspondent outside the walls. Since HRPP is run solely on volunteer power, the need far exceeds our capacity. We believe in organizing around the teaching ‘Each One, Reach One, Teach One’. If you know of a friend or comrade who believes in human rights for all human beings, please encourage them to fill out an application as well.

In Solidarity,

HRPP Leadership Collective
