Young Folk at the Hall (St. John's-2020)
The Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society & Fergus O’ Byrne present The 19th annual “Young Folk at The Hall"!
Well another year has rolled around, and we are getting set to produce the Young Folk at the Hall event once again! This year, celebrating our 19th anniversary, concerts will be at the LSPU Hall, Victoria Street, St. John’s, on Sunday, January 26th at 2 PM & 7 PM. The Saturday afternoon workshops will be held on Saturday, January 18th and Saturday, January 25th from 2PM to 5PM. at Brother Rice School, St. John's, NL
The purpose of the workshops will be to give young musicians an opportunity to share their talents with other young musicians in an informal setting; to develop musical relationships among the young musicians; and primarily, to foster the idea that performing and sharing music is an enjoyable and fulfilling activity. The content of the Sunday afternoon concert will emanate from these two workshops.
We would ask that the young musicians who wish to register have a repertoire (it need not be extensive) of folk songs and/or instrumental music. The workshops will team various young folk together to produce three to four pieces to be performed as an ensemble for the concert. Depending on the number of children registered we may have 4-6 ensembles performing in the concert.
We would encourage those familiar with the format of the workshops, to consider bringing some new repertoire to the project. Perhaps choose a piece of music or a song that is not commonly performed. If you need advice about this, please get in touch with me.
Fergus O'Byrne and several local musicians will facilitate these workshops sessions. The workshops will give the young musicians and singers an opportunity to work with and play with these older musicians, learn more about their instrument of choice (voice included) and explore the possibility of musical liaisons with their peers and have FUN! Also, the workshops will be FREE.
If you are interested, please register by filling out the details on the registration form below. Also, if you know of any interested young musical friends, please ask them to get in touch with me also. Unfortunately, space is limited so please register early and we cannot guarantee that space will be available.
Please note that it is necessary to attend both the orientation sessions to ensure that the group is comfortable with their repertoire once the concert time comes around.
